Icelandic Chickens

Second egg has pipped!

These Icelandics sure keep you guessing. I'm relieved, too, because when I was checking the eggs yesterday morning, that one had a glop of dried poo stuck to one side (it showed up the day before) Yesterday, I was worried that when the chick hatched, it might be a problem, so I picked that stuff off. Guess where the chick pipped? Yep, right there. Thank goodness!

And thank you all for the support

Yay! Sure made you wait for the encore.

So I have a little chicken buddy that lives in the neighborhood. He is 12 or 13, he keeps chickens, too, and he likes to come over sometimes to see my flock. Long story short, I think he was in there while I was away this afternoon, because I got home to find a broken egg and blood on the floor of the cage, the hen acting kind of upset, and her new baby laying on the floor next to her and cheeping. Its eyes were shut and it felt cold when I picked it up. I stuck it back under the mama, but I'm not sure that it will make it. I feel so sad and so sick right now. Here it is.

Hoping and praying that this little one is okay. It seems like most of the Icelandics I have seen that are black are pullets, and I could really use another girl, especially one of Flekka's daughters to help improve the bloodline. I'm sorry to be such a drama queen about this whole hatch. It has been a very rocky trial run.

Edited to say: I've picked out a name for this little one. Vona. It means "to hope" in Icelandic.

I'm praying that adorable chick is a pullet!

But if it's a roo that looks like Flekka, you'd have a real winner and I'd want to start buying eggs from you to hatch!!!

That is a beauty of a chick !! When you find a cool one thats time for some serious emergency warming up ! Whatever it takes. Often just cupping it in your hands and warm breaths over it will bring them around, but a heat lamp is a great thing to have handy. Is your broody with other hens? A rooster? Your little visitor might not be the one, but, it could be a good idea to have a quiet, gentle sit down with him/her. Teaching, only. Accentuate the positive. Make a real ally and future chicken grower.

Looking forward to seeing more pics please.

I agree with Dar, that could be a great rooster.

VONA LIVES!!!

She is a fighter, for sure! Mama has kept her close and warm, and she's out there peeping away with an impressive set of lungs. Based on the color of egg she came from, I think her biological mother is the pullet that I nicknamed "Psycho" because of how lively she is.

No, the broody and her eggs/babies have been kept in a cage separate from the rest of the chickens. I am very sure it was my visitor, but yes, this probably warrants a gentle talk. I don't want him to be scarred by it, just understand that you need to be really careful with baby chicks like that, and that you shouldn't be going through other people's stuff unless you have their permission. I think maybe I wasn't as clear on that part as I should have been, because a couple of weeks ago I told him that he was welcome to come over and see me and my chickens.

That's great news!

Congratulations on all the babies! I'm looking forward to my Easter Hatch next week and getting ready to set some Ameraucana and Iowa Blue/Am crosses.
