Icelandic Chickens

no snow down here....only once in a blue moon! i will probably end up keeping both crested cockerels.

I'm hoping that i get a decent hatch on the eggs (have 10 left after candling last week) that the broody is sitting on.

Okay, I just want everyone to know how sweet coldupnorth is. They are making me a killer deal on some Icelandic eggs. I am really anticipating the outcome. Thank you so much!

And Shawn, I'm sorry - I realized that what I said yesterday sounded like I was dumping on your birds. That's not at all how I meant to come across! I have enjoyed the birds I have from you very, very much.

no offense taken... glad you are enjoying them!

My surviving Icelandic baby, Vona, is slowly getting better at walking. She still kind of staggers and doesn't go very far, but I did see her kind of squat-walk over to the mama after I held her for a minute. Is this normal? I'm not sure if she's eating yet or not, which makes me worry, but she did make a little yellow poo (like newborn poo) on my pants.........bless her heart.

Here she is.

A nearby BYC friend gave me an Ameraucana chick last night to put under the broody with here. The mama is happy to have two babies again.

Well that was nice of your friend. Sweet baby.

im sorry i was there to witness that and discover it on top of that.... :( im still shaken by that.

I'm sorry you were, too. That was horrifying!

Well, I am ready to have a fit! I went and got some baby vitamins tonight for Vona, since she still seems to be struggling and I haven't seen her drink anything. Got the vitamins, diluted them with water and got her to take a drop, and then I noticed something on her head. Lice! Lice! What happened yesterday was awful, but this is the ultimate insult! I don't know how long those nasty things have been there, but it can't be long because I didn't see them yesterday. I will have no lice on my chickens, least of all my babies

So, Vona got a gentle oil bath to suffocate the stupid bugs, and I picked as many off of her as I could. Mashed them to a pulp when I got them, too. Grrrr................I wonder if that's why she hasn't been very lively? Anyway, got her and the other chick moved to a completely new carrier, along with mama, and I put a bunch of fresh wood shavings in there. Tomorrow I am going to burn clean the heck out of the one they were in. I'll be checking the second chick and mama for bugs, too.
