Icelandic Chickens

Hi! Hoping to pick up some chicks next month and was curious about the term "flighty" as it applies to Icelandics. In your mind does it help them get into trouble...ie flying into a neighbor's yard or does it help them avoid trouble...being able to escape the neighbor's dog...or both, they will fly over the fence but be able to get away from the dog.

When free ranging, do they hang with the flock....my existing flock are all heavy bodied, non-flyers...or can I expect them to go off on their own? Lastly do the return to the coop at night? If not, do I need to worry about them or will the find a place in a tree and be happy and safe?

Thank you!

I just need to know what to expect...I still want em regardless

Mine usually return to their coop at night, then they'll, one by one, start sleeping in the goat barn (it's bigger and higher), then I enclose them in a run until I want them free ranging again and the process repeats itself. Good Luck!

All of the chickens are put up in their temporary coop while we finish the run! Its already been such a great experience to see how beautiful they are! Ill be taking pics when we put them out into their new home!
Looking forward to the pictures!

Welcome!

I feel like the Norse Gods are on my side! Since getting these chickens we have seen a massive amount of help and support from people in Queen Creek who want to be a part of this extremely special opportunity. We now have a full cemented fence with a brand new coop and a shed. You people truly do work miracles! And i must say that after going through all of these posts that you are very entertaining. A little bit off your rockers.... but entertaining at that

Wow, that is great news! I can hardly wait to see pics.

Brad I like your Black Breasted Red Wing w/silver penciled wings. He's a beaut. I love the ones like him where the black is replaced with 'blue'. But I love them all truth to be told.

looking forward to the pics of the new coop and Dars clucks in their new home. I am also hoping that Dar will be hatching new chicks for this flock. We gotta keep him raising Icelandics !

Spring is finally creeping in here but nights still low 30s. I am still in pen building mode, for another month, then I will start the chicken houses.

Life goes on and it is good, but its better with Icelandic Chickens
