Icelandic Chickens

Yes the neighbor has been spoken to by my husband, he and I had too many bad words and I won't speak to him personally. I have given reports to the State Police (who forwarded it on to Animal Warden of Bay Co.) and my Township Supervisor. I've also warned some other chicken keeping neighbors in the area who already had knowledge that the dog runs a lot.
The State Police went down to speak to my neighbor after they took my report, Im sure they have been well warned as to what could possibly happen to their dog if it comes back down here. I don't like the idea of shooting the family pet of anybody, but it is only such at their home, not here. My dogs are pets here and theirs are predators.
I pray, a lot. I hope it's the other chicken keepers who end up dealing with it and not me again, so much stress.

Here are a few of them from this years second hatch. Almost 4 weeks old now. There are a lot of crests. A few of them have feathered legs. 50/50 on comb types. A lot of color variety.

ChicwannaB, I'm sorry you lost some chickens. My brother has a husky and while he is a very good dog, we did have a problem at first with him going after the chickens. We've been working with him for a year and keep him on a cable when he's outside, as a precaution. It helps that he's well-behaved, too. We haven't had any problems since last year. I hope things improve for you, too

Twister, those are lovely chicks! You're definitely going to have some lookers in there.

I got some more Icee eggs from coldupnorth to slip under one of my hens that had gone broody. I got twelve eggs, and I was worried because the broody is Leghorn-size and I knew she couldn't take a full dozen. Imagine my delight when I found out that my big poofy blue Wyandotte had gone broody at the last minute! So, she now has eight eggs under her (and keeps trying to hoard more from the other hens - greedy girl) my little Leghorn-EE mix has four Icee eggs + a couple of donations from her buddies, and both are happy as can be. Today is day four. Here's hoping things go better this time! I'd die of happiness if I ended up with a white chick from coldupnorth's Svana

Hello! Anyone on this thread in safe driving or mailing distance and interested in a couple of young Icelandic Roos from
www.berrytanglefarm.com ? They are very sweet, but I was going to try to focus on 2 breeds this year, HRIR and an OEGB, and I'd really, really hate to eat such rare birdies. I will if I have to, but... make me an offer, and I'll keep 'em off the plate.

Chickwanna I am sorrry about your losses, I follow an absolute policy of SSS. If any attacks are going on, its then automatic. Best all around. Just a stray or neighbor dog wandering then no problem.

As it happens I still have two yearling sleddogs to rehome yet, they are penned, do get out to be out in the yard when I am working around, so far no problems with the chickens, if there was, there wouldnt be, they'd be confined. If I do it then any other dogs around here need to be. As luck has it my closest neighbors that have dogs have small ones. So any big dogs have wandered afar.

Those are beautiful chicks gracing Alaska ! May their tribe increase !

I will have two breeder roosters available anytime here in MI. A Blackbreasted Duckwing , Bjorn, excellent with the hens, gentle, and I will have a number of his chicks to consider from him, also the same for my largest Icelandic rooster yet, Magnus, an Isi lookalike, and another flock 'meister' like Bjorn, both from my Isi from Mary O'Brians Isi. I am keeping him, he has a forever home here, plus another Blackbreasted Gold Duckwing son of his. I will have a number of cockerals to look over carefully this year.

Enjoy, life is good and better with Icelandic Chickens !

ChicwannaB, I hope the husky problem has been solved. That sounds like a difficult situation.
As long as Husky owner does his job of responsible dog ownership the problem can be considered solved I guess. The ripple effect is very long lasting tho in the sense that I can't let my chickens out on the lawn now except for the last couple hours before sunset of the evening and I'm so paranoid I set in my lawn chair with a shotgun across my lap.
The state police told me that because he has tasted blood he will most undoubtedly return if he ever gets the chance, (that will be determined by it's owner) I should try to get photos of it in my yard so the warden has the best evidence to prosecute them, and/or if it's actually attacking or provoking my chickens, or breaking into a tractor then I could do what I had to do. But I can't very well walk around all day with a camera around my neck and a shotgun in hand. It's still very fresh in my mind, raw and sensitive.
Ah yes! living the peaceful country life....
