Icelandic Chickens

I'll have to tell my DH that.......he is not amused when they "change his décor"!

I would agree with Jake that the Icelandics tend to be about the size of a Leghorn. When mine "talk", they also have a higher-pitched voice than the other LF chickens I keep, but they aren't squeaky like a bantam. One of my girls is from a different bloodline than the other four, though, and she does appear to be a bit smaller than the rest. She's quite dainty!

Mine are wary of anyone or anything that looks fishy. They are my two-legged cats - Sometimes they will come around you and you can hold them or pet them, but it's on their terms. I've never had much problem with them eating out of my hand, though. They're smart.

So I was not happy yesterday. I got up and was going about my routine in the preserve before work, and I found that one of the Icelandic eggs under my Wyandotte had been broken into and eaten. I have had a problem lately with an egg eater, and I don't know who it is yet, but needless to say I was a bit torque'd off. It looks like the egg was one that hadn't started developing, as I didn't see any blood or veining at all. I moved that hen and the rest of her clutch into her own carrier so that there's a wire door between her and the troublemaker.

Egg eaters are a problem ! Freezer camp when you find them ! I found one or two by the egg yolk on them, usually they groom it off.

One other trait I have seen in mine is that they fly much better then most other breeds. Its nice to watch, I havent had any problem getting them back in at night, they know where their roost is.

They are cat-like in sitting in your lap on their terms, they will come and go, some never will but will come close. Others come into the lap as soon as I sit down. Very individualistic characters.

Hi fellow Icelandic owners! I came to this thread to try to learn how to tell the sex of my young birds. I have two of the three pictured above. After reading through earlier posts, I am guessing they are both cockerels. Can someone tell me if that is true and what gives it away? Thanks! Zak (I think they are around 12 weeks old)

Yes, those would be boys. It's the size/color of the combs/wattles. Both pretty boys though.

2 of my 3 Icelandic hens are broody. I have a mixture of Icelandic, Japanese Bantam, and Cochin Bantam eggs under them.
