Icelandic Chickens

Thanks Jake, Kelly and Mike!
He gets his good looks honestly............he is the son of Elska hatched Aug 14, 2012. His sire was a black-breasted red son of my other original rooster, Ari. I didn't keep the cockerel/sire, so Eldur and his sisters (Eik, Egla and Eyja here and Eldey at a friend's house) are carrying on his genetic treasure.
Gola is a granddaughter (or maybe great-granddaughter) of kathyinmo's Kola. I love her!

I came home from work yesterday to find one of Elska's chicks dead and the last egg abandon in the nest...:( ...so now there are seven total. Mike, I don't like hatching this late either but it looks like Falki and Fjola and a couple other hens will be moving farther south in Illinois so I wanted to get a few more chicks on the ground from them. Heidi and Elska being broody was perfect timing so I went for it! It looks like Gola (full sibling to Jake's pullets but 10 days younger than the older two) has started laying. She is hanging with Eldur (whose tail is coming in nicely since his molt) in the picture below: (Ooops.......had to switch to Chrome to add the pic....)
So sorry to hear that you lost a chick. I hope the remaining chicks thrive. Eldur is a STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL bird. Wowzers! I am looking forward to getting the gorgeous birds! :love

Of all of the really beautiful birds that have been shown here Eldur is hands down the most beautiful and striking one that I have seen.

Get LOTS of offspring from him Mary. He is a breed winner. I am so thankful to have some of those genes in my little flock.

The two pullets that I got from Mary are laying pretty steady now, beautiful white eggs almost as large as the hens eggs.

I moved the last five started chicks into the outside brooder yesterday, with a heat lamp, its 42 this morning and will be steadily cooler as we go into the month. I have the seven eggs from Mary in the incubator and those chicks will spend the winter in a basement pen.

Life goes on and it is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

They are beautiful! I'm guessing I have a son of Eldur that I hatched from your eggs this Spring. He has a few of my girls under him and I am hatching some of their eggs right now, because I would like to keep some of the different genetics into my flock. I'm liking the dark coloring to add to my little flock of more lighter colors. You just never know what will happen during the winter, so I'm trying to pad my odds. My Hraun hasn't completely matured yet but he's getting to be beautiful like his father! His crow is still more on the young side.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on Eldur!

Laurie, WOW,

if I didn't know better I'd think he was a clone, not a son! It is good to know Eldur is passing his good looks onto his progeny, but that is uncanny!

You mentioned wanting the dark color........many blonde chicks were hatched here the first year Audun was flock master. I haven't hatched many this year because I have only been hatching from Falki, but next spring I'm going to see if I can get some more blonde chicks! The variety is what it is all about!

Spittin' image! Like a miniature Eldur. By the way, I think your good vibes are paying off........one of my three youngest "boys" is starting to look and act more girly. I noticed today that his/her face is lacking the obvious pink that the other two are developing around the comb. And I've never seen this one chest bump the others. Here's hoping!

Thanks everyone for the compliments on Eldur!

I love the variety! Eldur's sure a handsome guy, too. I love how colorful this breed gets. It makes it that much more fun to watch how the chicks grow out

My chocolate cockeral is getting quite handsome. I can't tell if he's going black or staying dark brown, but it's so exciting. Eeeee!

So sorry that you lost a chick and an egg, though

Hope the others do well for you.
