Icelandic Chickens

I sure hope that you get at least one girl out of the bunch! Is the white one still a boy? My whites are all girls and a couple of them sport "larger" combs and wattles than the rest of the girls. It will be fun to see what your "white" boy will grow up to look like. Just love the "box o' chocolates" that you get with Icelandics!

Picture time! I got updated pictures of my three little ones, because I checked this morning and was surprised to realize that they are two months old, as of yesterday. Any second opinions on gender are appreciated

Sorry for all of the blurry shots - they are sure lively!

Laurie, here is the little white one. You said Svana's eggs were that light cream color, right? I believe this little one came from a stark white egg, so it wasn't Svana's baby, if that's the case (darn!)

Baby #1 (Please enlarge!) :

Baby #2 (please enlarge to see wattles)

Baby #3

Baby #3 in the middle, there, with its head up.

Group shot. #'s 1 and 2 on the left.

#2

This one is just for giggles, sorry. I tried to get a shot of all their faces by bribing them with some food, and.........well..........this is as good as I got. #1 on the left, 3 in the middle, 2 on the right. 2 and 3 have hairdo's <3

I usually noticed a larger comb on the cockerals, also very red and then the wattles, usually when they are showing the pullets arnt showing anything.

Mary the pullets are laying regularly now, they are great. And the boys are growing very nicely. I have one more pullet to move from the roosters pen, the two new guys are with the pullets and will remain with them until late winter when I divide them into the two flocks.

I will be keeping two of this years Isi sons at least through late spring until I am sure I have some new hatched ones. There are two beautiful slate blue ones. And a dark son of Bjorn that I am keeping back. The hatch from the eggs that Mary brought are due this week, so I will be watching youngsters grow out all winter.

And, I will be getting the new Nikon first of Nov, then we shall see about getting some pics loaded.

Good Morning Everyone! Happy Columbus Day! I was gone to Kentucky for a few days to visit my sons and grandsons so I'm a bit behind.

Jake, Great news of the flock! I'm glad to hear they are all doing well! Yay for the camera!!

Red, I'm hesitant to make any determination based on the photos. When you're looking at them in person, it is easier to tell if the comb color is different between them. I have had a couple pullets that fooled me with wattles that were on the large side so keep a close eye on the feather development (pointed hackle and saddle feathers) and behavior (upright stance when something is happening that is out of the ordinary) for more clues on the cockerels. Their size and color pattern will also be helpful in determining gender. Here is my guess, #3 is a cockerel and the others (at this point) look like pullets to me. Sometimes a cockerel who is lower on the "pecking order" will be delayed in showing the redness and size in his comb and wattles, so they can fool you. The feathers never lie

Since this is a thread about Viking chickens, and this is Columbus Day, I thought I would share this.

When I was a child, I could not understand how someone could get credited for "discovering" a place that was already inhabited by people who obviously discovered it thousands of years earlier. It was then re-discovered by the Vikings, and later re-discovered in 1492.

I was fascinated with history, and read quite a bit outside of school. I read about the Viking exploration and visits to North America. So, in honor of Columbus Day the fall of my fourth grade year, I built a model of a Viking ship out of cardboard, Styrofoam, an old sheet, glue and my paints, I took it to school, and I did a history report on Viking exploration.

Happy Columbus Day

;)

Good on you Myrth !!

Seeing as how Columbus was looking for the East Indies he was a bit off.

And even the Vikings were latecomers, but, probably the first Europeans here, unless some came way earlier. We are a long ways from knowing.

Anyhow, Happy Columbus Day, just as an American icon for exploration.

I have been fooled almost as often as right on picking sexes on the little guys, the best indicator is bright red combs and pert upright tails. With the wattles coming on.

Well, I am now sure, I have a mottled cockerel by Isi's son Bjorn ! One of two roosters in the outside brooder with the last hatch, and 3 nice pullets with them. When I get the Nikon there WILL be pics !

I have just a dozen pullets now, with the older hens this gives a nice number for the 2014 breeding season. Also have a very nice set of Cockerels in the growout pen, some nice dark ones and a couple Isi look-a-likes. Plus two that look like they will have some Blue on them.

I have my rooster line-up for the season so these will be available, free to breeders. All are by Isi or his son Bjorn.

Love those mottled ones. Looks like I'll have at least one baby so far that will be mottled. So exciting!

Thank you everyone for the input on the chicks. I was checking them again yesterday and am still second-guessing myself on their gender. I think I'm just too excited to tell right now, haha.
