Icelandic Chickens

Hi Diva!

Pictures of the Falki x Fjola chicks that Heidi and Elska hatched last night through this afternoon (there is one more egg under Elska that hadn't hatched when I took these pictures. I candled it and saw movement so put her back on the cleaned-up nest with the chicks and egg....we'll see if it hatches

). Their colors amazingly similar to each other and to the single chick that Eyja weaned early and was lost.

Heidi with her four.......

Elska with her four (+?)....

Its Oct here too, and I am watching seven eggs from Mary in the incubator now. They will winter in the basement, our outside night temps are 42 or below. I am really looking forward to these chicks !

Counting dark heads, I now have at least five cockerals by Bjorn, my dark blackbreasted son of Isi, available for picking your choice up. These are all thick bodied like Bjorn.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Love the pictures! I love seeing broody hens with their new little babies

Twister, those are some awesome crests! That first picture looks intense.

No news here, other than everyone is still plugging along and fine. Babies are still getting used to the cold, but they've gone on two outings now with mom while it's chilly.

I came home from work yesterday to find one of Elska's chicks dead and the last egg abandon in the nest...

...so now there are seven total.

Mike, I don't like hatching this late either but it looks like Falki and Fjola and a couple other hens will be moving farther south in Illinois so I wanted to get a few more chicks on the ground from them. Heidi and Elska being broody was perfect timing so I went for it!

It looks like Gola (full sibling to Jake's pullets but 10 days younger than the older two) has started laying. She is hanging with Eldur (whose tail is coming in nicely since his molt) in the picture below:
(Ooops.......had to switch to Chrome to add the pic....)

Mary he is a very beautiful rooster ! How old is he? This springs?

The two pullets are laying nicely now, good sized eggs, not quite a medium but getting there. I am putting up the light today in the outside brooder and moving the five in the basement outside, 3 pullets and two roosters. I am hoping for at least 3 more from the seven eggs that you brought me. That will make two very nice flocks for the spring.
