Icelandic Chickens

Here is a picture of Lukka sitting on her eggs. They are due to hatch next Saturday! She has been a good Mom so far only leaving the nest once a day at most.

I talked to Sigrid today. She was happy to hear the Lukka is finally going to be a Mama. The first time she went broody was really early for a hen and she didn't get to finish the job. I hope she hatches four out of four!

Kathy, I told Sigrid today that you are doing a test hatch on six eggs. She is going to follow your progress from Iceland, so put your posts here. I am so excited for your first candling! I am almost as excited as I was with my first hatch of Icelandics. I have been so impressed with them. 100% hatch rate since I lost the first 2 due to the temperature being off in the Brinsea. They come out of the shell, strong and hardy, eating and drinking right away. We have not had one single poopy butt. Even the blondies have pristine little tushies! I am just anxious to see how well they travel!

Sigrid !
I didn't have time to respond appropriately last night. I have my 6 year old grandson here for the weekend, and we were quite busy.

I am so humbled that Mary has allowed me to hatch these precious eggs. I am very excited and hopeful. I received the precious cargo, packaged as if fine china. Mary was ever so careful doing this. April 2 was day 1, so am hoping for a hatch on April 22.

I cleaned and sanitized my Sportsman incubator an extra time, before setting these beautiful eggs. I will plan to candle them on April 8, after one week of incubation. I can hardly wait, and I will keep you updated.

Mary, thanks again for this opportunity. I just can not put into words how fortunate I feel.

I thought the same thing! I was wondering if the nest box is too small? It is a standard nest box I purchased and assembled. She has more room if she repositioned herself. The nest box and Lukka are secured in the bottom of one of the 4x4 coops enclosed on three sides with plywood, wire on the front covered with plexiglas, and plenty of ventilation above. They will be able to move around in there safe and secure, and when she gets ready she can bring her babies out into the run.
