Icelandic Chickens

if I have to I am going to keep a trio in the house, have big great dane wire cages.

I am keeping a grandson of Blua(Blue ) I got from Mary, and is also a grandson from MaryNotAFarm in Ill, he has beautiful red on the back and blue on the breast with the largest red crest I have seen to date, plus a beautiful rose comb. And he is breeding. He has two hens with him, might get a third. Life goes on.

We shall see what can be.

Well my second hatch went horribly wrong. During lockdown my incubator topped working. Not sure how many hours it was down before I found it. I stated up my spare incubator and moved them. I had 6 Icelandic and 2 Silver Ameraucana eggs. The Ameraucanas hatched quickly with no problems. The Icelandic's were shrink wrapped bad. I had to hand hatch 4 of them. Took bout 12 hours but I got them out.

3 of the four Icelandic's look like zombies (membrane still stuck to them in places), but are strong and healthy, doing great.
The forth Icelandic who happens to be the healthiest looking cant stand up or walk. The problem is not with its legs, they are strong and in the proper place. It lays on is side and pushes itself around. I have been hand feeding it. Any ideas?
deputy, How is the 4th chick doing?

Lost a chick last night but it was not the one that can't stand up. Here are some pics of whats going on. I built a thing to put her in that forces her to stand upright. Im hoping to train her to stand on her own, but every time I let her go she plops right over. Other than that she's strong and alert.

She seems to have a lot of toes on that foot, what does the other foot look like? When legs splay to the sides, etc. some people put the chick in a cup with napkin under them, so they can keep feet under them. I don't tknow if this would help in her circumstance. You might want to post with photos in the "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread to see if someone else can come up with options.

Well I decided to put the chick down. The problem got worse, guess there was to much brain damage, it just kept moving its head back and forth like Stevie Wonder and could not eat or drink on its own.On a positive note the rest of the flock is doing great. The chicks are really starting to change and getting some amazing colors and really neat crests. one of my roosters is trying to crow and its not even 2 months old yet.

Hope everyone has a Great Holiday Season!!

deputy, I'm sorry you lost the two chicks. I hope you will post some pictures of the others. I won't have any chicks here until spring so I miss seeing the little fuzzies!!

Our Thanksgiving dinner at my SILs was great and the weather cooperated so that we didn't have to deal with hazardous roads. We got home just as darkness was settling in and I got the coop doors shut before any critters were out and about.

We are forecast for some thawing most of this week, so maybe the flock will be out and about and I'll feel like taking some pictures of them.
