Icelandic Chickens

So, I'm new to BYC and I'm trying to read the entire site within the past six months. This is the second time I came across your thread. I need an update on your efforts and flock.. Please
:welcome NJ Mike, The original poster no longer has Icelandic chickens and has not posted on this thread in years. There is good information about Icelandic chickens on the thread from the years when she was active.

Hello everyone. I purchased Icelandic chicks just over a week ago. They are supposed to be about 11 weeks old now, but seem so much smaller than all the other pictures I’ve found here of similar age. Could this be how they were raised (hatched then caged with many other chicks in fairly small quarters), kept inside, etc.? Could the breeder have just been mistaken? Or do they just vary in size?

They are not 11 wks, they would be fully feathered. They look more to be around 4 or 5 weeks to me. So still need a heat source.

Thank you. I feel ashamed that I was not prepared or educated enough to know what I should expect age wise from chickens. I'm very "green" in the chicken world. We ended up losing a chick, likely due to not keeping their environment controlled enough.

Looks so cute..How much do they cost?

These kids seriously crack me up. I thought they had all gotten eaten! But alas they were just tucked in for bed!! Haha

Hey everyone! I live in New Jersey and would like to purchase Icelandic chickens in the future.
What are some good breeders/vendors?

I know that there is tons of variation but I really want something similar to this rooster I found online- Rose-comb (basically not single comb), mottling, some kind of red base (silver for females is OK), and a crest. I would probably have to grow out multiple chicks to get something like this but any leads would be appreciated.

Are there any significant differences between the 4 common imported strains? Does anyone have a photo comparing flocks of pure representatives from each strain??

This thread was very active at one time but not now.
I suggest you contact David with that question.
He would be able to help you choose which line would give you the look you are seeking.
