Icelandic Chickens

Take the pictures, they will be helpful to have on file.

The first one looked almost like a Rhodesian but it could be any number of things.

In other, more fun news...

The reindeer have started to have their babies. I will try to get pics tomorrow.

The Icelandics are hysterical! We watch them instead of tv. I believe it was Kathy that posted a video of Icelandics taking their treats and running off to consume them in private. Well I have 13 Icelandics and 1 turkey in a brooder and when I give them goodies they grab and run all over trying to find a private place to eat their treat. It's chickie mayhem, all of them running and jumping around each other.

That dog almost looks like a pit bull and I'm with Kathy, I would put down a dog like that on my property without thinking twice...

Well maybe twice... first the paintball with pics and a warning, then a .22 caliber, aiming for the head or heart area.

I wouldn't even bury them, they would go into a large plastic bag and then a ride to a dump. I wouldn't keep them anywhere around my property, in fact dirt with their blood would go inside the bag and then they would be disposed of, far from my home.

and yes, those dog owners are IRRESPONSIBLE.

Mary those are a variation/mixed breed of pitbulls,

a mixed bag at best, the majority are excellent people dogs, a bad, very bad minority are dangerous to animals, very strong prey drive, there is a good possibility that these were dumped, the 'good' pit bulls are very family and home territory oriented. Roaming is just not a big trait to them.

From long experience the best answer is SSS.

Protecting your livestock has to come first.

The donkeys are really great guardians, and fun, I love them. A livestock guardian dog is excellent too, Pyranees, Akbash, many of them, and they sound the alarm, and with the Akbash and related stand their ground, one of the few breeds ready to take on a roaming pit bull. And they are excellent with kids and granduns.

I have to say, I love the laws about this stuff in Texas.
If humans, livestock, or pets are in danger - we are 100% allowed to shoot the intruder.

Hurray for TX!

Regarding Mary's Marauding Dogs...the good news is that the dogs did have on both collars and a chain and Hubby said that they looked scared. It seems as tho they may have somehow broken loose and are trying to find their way back home.

I'm with you Mary, paintball gun is the warning and then its SSS.

I have become an expert marksmen since becoming a chicken farmer!

I hope they made their way back home and are now on stronger chains!

Thanks everyone. We have never seen these two dogs before. The emus are not full sized until 18 months. I lost sleep last night worrying about this.

I am going to have to get DD to help with photos of these kids. She has a natural eye, a steadier hand (she took the great shots of Eldvör) and my birds always seem to want to be ON me, making it a little harder to get a good shot

I have been wanting to get shots of the one I call Little Lukka because the coloring looks like it's going to be similar. And I wanted to try and get a gender determination of my little mullet head so that I can name that one, (s)he's definitely a keeper!!! As some may remember, we built a cool brooder that is currently housed in the garage. It will be mounted to the wall in the new coop once we build it. I have 13 Icelandics and 1 turkey in the lower level and it's all very easy to clean and take care of. I was beginning to think it was getting a little crowded although sometimes it doesn't look too full...

I seem to be a few chicks short of a flock. 9 in the brooder, 2 on me... oh, here they are

I was trying to show you "Little Lukka" who was hard to photograph cause she kept climbing up my arm and I had another on my other hand (the one with the camera)

I had a heck of a time getting Mullet off me long enough to get a shot, all of shots I did get were of a chick hopping or flying back onto me, so in the end, this is what I got. Any guesses of which gender this one may be?
