Icelandic Chickens

Mary........beautiful chicks.

I can bring your trap back as soon as I get back. Or if you need it sooner, you can go up and get it - it's below the new coop under the pine tree.

My goodness, that is a very silver chick! And the black with white: hmm, I wonder if that one will feather out all black, or birchen? They can be so hard to tell at that age . . . it seems like Icelandics follow their own set of rules when it comes to adult coloration. But then, that's one of their many charms!

Dar- Last night I candled the eggs Noelle dropped off from your house. The icelandics were all clear---but the 4 Americauna eggs had strong veining (like crazy strong) for day 5 or 6.

Should I come give your roo a little pep talk? Bring my diagram over for the pullets?

Okalie dokalie-- here are some of the icelandics I hatched from Mary's eggies. They are in a pen with a couple of orloffs and mixed chicks, if you are wondering what the little duckle-thingies are.

And yes, I am fairly certain they are all boys. Maybe one girl.

118 today. So far, no croakers. We did have a VERY near thing with 14 day-old chicks I am brooding for someone who is traveling to Mexico. (2 of the chicks are Icelandics from Mahonri's birds, and will be living at my house forever!)

Poor birds spent 10 minutes in an air-conditioned car, and were almost DOA. Their momma freaked out, but we hit them up with electrolytes, sugar water, and since my icemaker is APPARENTLY broken, made them a nice little air-conditioned room comprised of my entire stash of frozen bananas.

The DH came home, rushed back out, and brought back 5 squares of ice. Hello, chickie igloos!

I was SURE 4 of the chicks (buttercups) were goners, but after 10 minutes sitting on a Jeffer's ice pack, in an igloo, they perked right up.

...Brooding chicks in Arizona: a whole different world.
