Icelandic Chickens

The heat has been awful here. I feel like I live in Arizona. 108 heat index for a week is just too much! Tomorrow I am moving the chicks out of the Nella brooder, out into their own coop. It gets "down" to 75 at night, and I am not gonna add heat lights. Hope to get pictures tomorrow.

Yikes Kathy! I moved Tiny Dancer and the little roo out of the brooder in the barn today because it was just too darn hot in there. I put them in the little duck pen. Look at Stella. She stalked them all day. She wants to Momma those babies but when I let her near them she is kind of mean to them. She has all but abandoned her baby, who couldn't care less. Tonight I picked Blind Lucy up from the floor to put her on the handicap roost and Skye's baby fell out from under Lucy's wing! Hit the floor and everything! I put it in the nest box with Skye and I think it is fine. Good grief!

Oh, and I have another Icelandic broody! She's been sitting for a couple of days so I gave her four of the eggs that went on lockdown today. I kept 15 in the incubator. She's gonna think you get babies by sitting for four or five days! I may not keep any of these chicks that I hatched and just hope I get enough pullets in the ones that Lukka and the new broody have to replace the ones I lost. Not that you can ever replace them.

Now I understand the whole New Year's Day Hatch thing so much better! It doesn't work for me but now I get it!!

Thats a big reason why I really do prefer the nothern part of America, hottest we have had so far is 86, and that is rare.

Are you getting your trap back today?

That hole is plenty large enough for a coon to squeeze through.

Ditto. I timed my first hatch this year to coincide with our house warming party on February 6th, there were lots of chicks for our guests to play with but man were those babies in the house forEVER till it was warm enough to put them out.

It's a whole different world....
