Icelandic Chickens

You can't have them. They are not haboob-proof!

*le sigh*

It's too hot for chicks anyway. See brooding chicks in AZ (on the 118 day, last Friday)

Well, I just don't know. From the hatch I did not think this chick was going to make it. It has always been a runt, and I really thought it would die. It just keeps on going, but just doesn't grow. I have no idea what is going on with it.

Jake asked:
Snaphu tell us please how you got started with Icelandics !! There is a story there that I and others want to hear !!

I moved into a rural area a few years back, and as chicken farming has always been in my family, I wanted to obtain my own again. I’d only had the regular brown hens which laid brown eggs, and that was fine, but with all the new fancy breeds that are easily obtainable, I decided I wanted to get something different.

I did some research, and decided I wanted something purer and a heritage type chicken. The Canadian heritage breed is the White Chantecler, I don’t have any as yet, but that’s another breed I’d like to have.

I know Jóhanna Harðardóttir, and I have several relatives in Iceland. My great grandparents and my grandfather immigrated to Canada from Iceland in 1893. So the Íslenka landnámshænan was VERY interesting to me! Knowing that these were the chickens that my ancestors had, and knowing that the breed was almost extinct and very rare in the U.S. and totally non-existent in Canada (as far as I know) helped with my decision to start the preservation project here in Canada.

for you! And welcome!

I know there were some other Canadians here interested in them, but can't recall who.

Good for you Snaphu !!

I am glad that it worked out for you.

Did you have any problem getting them into Canada?

I notice that your puter has Icelandic font on it, that has got to help.

Michelle......my girls are 5 months old today, so Briet was just a few days fro
5 months. But still, it's pretty early for eggs. Nothing on Luna yet.

Caught Briet in the nest today right after she laid her egg.
