Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, I wondered about your guy's (He needs a name!! You know he's staying, he's too beautiful to let go!) white hackles and saddle feathers. My guy, Bjartur (pronounced sort of like the name of the actress that played "Maude" -with hard/rolling "r" sounds and "t" not "th") was the only one I've had with no gold/red leakage at all.

Here are two pics of Anna, the first of her early this spring and the second one from yesterday. She molted and, now that her new set of feathers has grow in, seems to have more mottling than before. Or maybe the tips are larger and there aren't really more "spots", just the same amount only larger. I still do not have any other mottled Icelandics....

Maybe one of the new three will be!! Hope springs eternal here!!

Kathy, I love the corn maze for blondes!

(and no, I'm not blonde) And that poor wet, molting chicken - poor thing looks awful.

Other Mary - Congrats on the babies! Pretty girls, Kella and Anna! Anna does look to have more mottling.

for more mottled birds for you!

Jake - where are you?

I have a couple of mottled Icelandics, but for the most part, the girls are either buff/blonde or Stella. I think both the roos I kept are mottled.

Beautiful birds! Love the little crests and the color patterns. They almost look like crosses between Old English Game and Wyandottes. Glad to see you're preserving a rare breed!

Here are the new chicks!! The last chick to hatch is the dark one in the top pic and on the left in the second pic. They're so different, it'll be easy to tell apart!!!

Very cute Mary! My five little babies that were brooder raised got to go into the layer yard today. I left their pop door open. The first part of the day they were running for their lives but things settled down and they seemed to have a great time. All five returned to the grow out coop at dusk.

I got injured today. I was feeding Jack and Diana and I was carrying a crop in my hand. Sometimes Diana gets aggressive where food id involved and a swat on the butt straightens her out. Well, as I was pouring oats from a bucket into the bucket Jack eats from, the crop accidentally touched his nose. He panicked and ran but not before shoving me into the rails and stomping on the outside of my ankle leaving a hoof impression! I found a broken shovel with a handle and used that as a crutch to get back to the house. Michael happened to be up using the mens room and looked out the window and saw me so I got some much needed help. I have iced it all day and the swelling is going down. I felt so bad for Jack because it was totally my fault. I shouldn't have had the crop in that hand and I was wearing flip flops! Here's the damage:

Mary

It's one of those things that happens sometimes, I'm sure Jack will not hold it against you. It looks painful....I'm sure Michael will be taking good care of you....IF you let him!!
