Icelandic Chickens

Well that bird is certainly not a purebred Icelandic. Has to have been crossed with an EE or an Ameraucana.

I have a blue Ameraucana and a blue EE, and both look very similar to that. I've never seen muffs or a beard on an Icelandic. That kind of makes me worried for some of the 'purebred' flocks in the US

That's exactly why I wasn't going to allow my last Icee chick to breed - No guarantee it was pure.

Mahonri, sorry about your roo! Both my boys are very loud, but I've been very blessed by the fact that my dad is an insulation nut and our garage is heavily insulated

The only ones that can hear my roos going off are me and my mom, and maybe my neighbors across the street if they come stand in our driveway.

There is an FFA group in the east valley that is building a "project" coop.

They have promised to keep records and keep the flock pure. I am considering giving them Jack and 9 pullets... my entire Icelandic Flock. I just think if you have Icelandics, you need to breed them and keep the race going. I was able to get a roo and 3 pullets out of Drekki Jr before I had to send him away, Jack isn't going to give me this privilege, he's going to have to go early and they may as well have all of the hens and pullets at the same time. I will miss their great egg laying.

Makes me very sad, but at the same time very glad that I am perpetuating the breed.

Dar I am sure that you could get some hatching eggs from them. Just to keep a flock going for you.

Thats a great thing that you are doing for them ! Way to go !

That's a good idea, then you could start a new flock and try again for that quiet roo

That's very kind of you.

I have my first spring time broody Icelandic! Today is day 2, if she stays a few more days I'll give her my cinco de Mayo turkey eggs, because I really don't think those Titleist will hatch, although that would be really nice if the they would (free golfballs!)

I've had 5 golf balls in one nest for over a week now.

FINALLY! I have a broody... but not my Icelandic, "Cloud"... it's Olive, my Blue Copper Olive Egger!... and she has all 8 eggs (NNs) from Maine under her!
