Icelandic Chickens

Sooo I just checked the three Icee eggs under my broody. Today is day 8. No veining. They're all infertile. At least 6/7 eggs I gave to a friend here in Utah were developing, last I checked.

Can I have a pity party now?

It happens, at least you know that there are more fertile ones where those came from. I can relate, I am sweating a power outage from last thurs eve, incubator dropped 5 degrees, we shall see tomorrow when the first ones should pip, so, count it all as spring time hatching blues. By fall you will feel much better with your new spring hatch chickens.

I'll join in too. My broodies are driving me crazy. One is playing musical nesting boxes. Broodies are great when it's one or 2, but I have 4 right now. The Orp isn't getting any more babies - she crushed 2 and failed to protect the one she hatched.

I just wanted to say hello. We are new to chickens and Icelandics. We got 7 11 week old Icelandics on Saturday. 4 hens and 3 roosters. I'm sure we'll have to rehome 2 of the roosters at some point, but right now they are all getting along.

Who did you get your Icelandics from ?

If you keep sibling Roosters together they will often get along, if, they are free ranging, if confined then not always. Once separated then alway fighting if reintroduced. That has been my experience anyhow.

Very nice looking youngsters !! Keep the pics coming.

I looked on Craigslist in my area for hens, and I found a beautiful Icelandic rooster. After emailing back and forth with the woman, she asked if I would be willing to take all 7 of them. She had purchased them for breeding but wasn't going to be able to breed them. I do have plans to hatch some eggs in the future.

The roosters are siblings, and hang out together. So far so good. But, they're not free ranging, too dangerous because of hawks and owls. We'll see how it goes.

Meet Greta, she LOVES the camera!

This coming Tuesday is the 'first grand opening' of my Icelandc chicks hatching, I hope, I have several in with the Delawares, and will have more in two weeks with the Iowa Blues.

These first are by my Isi, a son of Mary O'Brians Isi, and in a few weeks will be hatching chicks by his Black Breasted Duckwing son Bjorn. He is a true Black Breasted, very dark breast. I have a brother of his a Black Breasted Gold Wing that I am taking to ChickenStock in Lansing on June 22nd. I have two sons of Isi I am keeping, one dark and one a splash pyle like his sire. I named him Magnus as he is the biggest of the Icelandic Roosters that I am keeping. I plan to have chicks from all 3 developing this year.

Life goes on, and its better with Icelandic Chickens !

could you pack in 3 or 4 extra Icee's for me?? Im going to chicken stock this year. at least one cockerel if you can tell. I'd prefer baby chicks, or teenagers, but if you don't have enough to bring some fertile eggs will do. I'm getting a 2nd incubator (shhhhhhhhhh)
