its just that I have to butcher excess roos in a week or so and I don't want to make any mistakes in my choices.

I have a couple of Icelandic hens with that coloring but I've also seen other non-Icelandic breeds with that coloring, too. With such a wide array of coloring, the Icelandics can be difficult to completely pin down unless you know that lineage of the bird. Good luck with her - she is a beauty!

*Beautiful Roos - always a hard choice in deciding what you want to keep. I know I have that problem with my Icelandics cockerals. We have a couple more that will have to go to freezer camp soon, but I need to make room in the freezer first.

Jake, My blue Falki x Forsaela pullet, Glima, has started to show some red leakage on the nape of her hackles. She is in the foreground, that is a full brother, Galsi, behind her. Do you see anything like this on Gjoska? When she left here, I didn't see any red leakage on her. Grima had on spot on her left side just in front of the wing bow that was reddish, but Gjoska was pure blue.

I'll have to get some - when it dries out around here. Too bad chickens don't have webbed feet! Of course, with the highs in the 30s the last few days, it will all be frozen mud and they'll just have to learn to ice skate!

Yeah, our 10 day forecast is not too balmy either. Chance of rain, sleet and maybe snow tomorrow and highs only in the mid 40s for the entire time.

I'm not ready for winter yet!

Ahem. Anyway - it's getting colder, for sure! My little Icelandic chicks are getting braver about venturing out into the cool air, though. They make me so happy every time I see them. I am beginning to wonder if Kelly's guess of them all being girls is true. No pink combs yet! (knock on wood) Nine and a half weeks old, now

Nope, no leakage at all, solid blue, she is also one of the largest, Grimma is the other large one.

It is actually the rooster that is so tame, is he much younger then the others ? He likes to be petted and I have held him a number of times, he eats from my hand quite readily. For sure a great temperament. His comb is smaller then Griimmas!

I am glad you gave me the repeat on the pics.

They are all absolutely gorgeous in their colors ! I am trying to give daily treats to get all to come and eat from the hand, so far its working.

Of my roosters I raised here two I am keeping, a blue with red hackles, but a SC

, and another younger one that is the first mottled I have gotten from the Isi line. He is also a SC. But one of them will get some time with some hens. Probably the mottled one if he grows out well.

The four new hatches I watch closely, so far they are nice and quiet and I am trying to keep them that way. Three are getting a bit lighter then the other, who is also the smallest so far. All are eating well. I will be handling all four.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

On the four new hatched so far barely a line is even showing yet. I look at them closely each morning. 3 are a bit lighter, while the smallest one is staying quite a bit darker.

Soon as I can see I will post.

These four are quite a bit quieter then my Isi line chicks. Thats nice.

I am going down shortly to feed and check on them, heading out early today though, back later.

Jake, You mentioned that Gosi's comb was smaller than Grima's comb. I believe that is just his age at this point. The thing I have noticed about combs in my flock is that the rose combs the females have are all very different. While most of my males have some what similar rose combs when adults, the pullets and hens vary quite a bit. They also change as they get more mature.
Here are some close-ups of some of the combs on pullets and hens I've had here.
This first two will be very familiar to Jake,
Gjoska has an almost round rose with a tail.


Grima has a "sloppy" rose comb with many points.




These are Eldur's three full sisters (un-named cockerel x Elska). He has a single comb and so does Egla (in the middle) but
Eik on the left has a "sloppy" rose comb while Eyja on the right has a "neat" rose comb.



Here are Falki and Forsaela (parents of Gjoska and Grima pictured above). He has what I see as typical of a cock comb here.
Forsaela had the smallest rose comb in length of any female I've had. I hope her daughters and son put that trait in Jake's flock.


Here is Asta, one of my two original hens, she was just under 3 years old when this picture was taken.. She has a "sloppy" rose comb with many longer points.
