Icelandic Chickens

Thank you, I will print out the puppy ap and send to him.

When do you plan your breeding? I am interested. I get down to Ohio several times a year, on average.

Jake
He doesn't have puppies right now, but he posts info for others that do. The most recent ones are in Iceland. The plan is for us to breed Sunna her next cycle which should be August/Sept. Sunna and the stud dog chosen have a 0% Inbreeding coefficient (5 generations) and should produce a nice variety of fur colors with 50% short coat, 50% long coat.

1/8 Ayat Bb Ss = tan shade, normal pigment, short fur

Mike,

Shoot, I shouldn't have googled the breed. How is your dog with your chickens? My Shepherd is very good with them when I'm around, but if left unattended, she will desqueak the squeaky toy. They look to be a heavy shedder? Short coat would be a must here - too many sticker bushes.

Kelly, mine are good with the chickens. They'll put escapees back into their run. When I free range the dogs might bother them a little, the dogs want them in a group, not a tight group, but together. I don't think the shedding is bad, but I've had Siberian Huskies since about 1978, so I have a different idea on what lots of shedding is. Show sheen can be used to help keep burrs out or make it easier to get them out, but my short haired is easier to groom, and brings less into the house than my long haired.

A peafowl happened to fly out of the run. I let Moose out and he just runs over to it, it flies back into the run. Dog's mouth is closed, no showing teeth. That's how he also handles loose chickens, too.

Good to know, thanks Mike. I love my German Shepherd to pieces, but she has a very high prey drive. A couple of weeks ago, she caught a jack rabbit. It didn't fare so well for the rabbit. She does chase off all of the predators though, so that is great! If I get another dog, I want more of a working dog. I've looked at LGD's, but some of them seem awfully territorial.

ETA to fix typos.

I was thinking of an English Shepherd, being familiar with them as farm/herding dogs and training the pair I took to Israel to be flock dogs in Samaria. They did very well, have raised two litters since then and nothing but praise for them. But, I have always been attracted to the Icelandic Sheep Dog, all things Icelandic farm animals, from their genetic purity, to hardiness and people friendly. I would love to have a couple Icelandic Horses too as they are the most comfortable horse I have ridden. And again their temperaments are great. Price, thats another matter.

I too have had sled dogs, Malamutes and some Sibes, coats are just to be brushed/combed, no problems there for me.

Whats the costs on importing a pup from Iceland? That could be great for helping the gene pool here. By costs I mean fees etc, airfare I can guestimate. Iceland to NYCity to Detroit would be most direct.

What do pups in Iceland cost? Generally.

You got the mind hooked Mike. PM me if you want or here, I think this being a place for Icelandic Chickens that other Icelandic farm animals are in line, plus our Moderator is also a fan of critters Icelandic.

I've never really wanted an Icelandic Polar Bear but I understand that the few that come are tourists, although I think Polar Bears are great, as are all Bears, to me. We have a nice resident Black Bear population here, because of all of the state and federal forest here.

Life goes on and it is good, but better with Icelandic Chickens, and all other critters Icelandic !

Now you have me interested in researching the icelandic sheep dogs, not that i'd probably ever get one...

Out of my 8 icee eggs i started with, three were clears and one had an early blood ring. 4 left, developing well.
