Mike, Sorry to hear you lost one. The singleton that Gaela hatched also died.

It was very small and sticky and when I got home from work yesterday, it was not under her. I found it in the bedding. It was blonde. I made the decision to take two of Anna's chicks and give them to Gaela. She seems to be doing fine with them so far. Anna absolutely noticed that her clutch was smaller and went all over the small coop looking for and calling for them. They can hear her from Gaela's coop so I thought it might be a problem but they all seem to be doing okay.

I'm sorry about the chick.

I'm sad to admit that I wasn't aware that "vega" was in any way connected to banjos. I will have to ask my Dad who the maker of his was. It belonged to his mother and had to have been made before 1937, the year she died.

I put the mommas and chicks out into separate pens to enjoy some sunshine this afternoon. I will try and get some pictures.

Glima, the fourth of the Foraela X Falki pullets was on the nest yesterday and didn't go to the roost last night....

I have some Barnevelder eggs coming this week that I won in the Easter Hatchalong Fun Night contests. It would be great if she would hatch them for me! Here is a picture of Glima from last week......she has a comb that is closest to the shorter comb that Forsaela had:

Ugh, other Mary, your girls are so beautiful with their chicks! Love the pictures - thank you for sharing them.

I have yet to have a broody Icelandic, so in that department, I'm living vicariously through the good peeps on here. I'm kind of surprised that none of mine have even tried yet. My oldest hen, Flekka, is almost two. She doesn't even lay most of the time. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong? :/

Looks like Glima is following in her three sisters footsteps......stayed on the nest today and roared at me then bit my hand when I checked to see if she had any eggs under her. I left her with three golf balls and will try moving her to a broody coop tomorrow night if she stays.

My two original hens were both broody twice the year they turned one and their second year as well. Anna raised more than one clutch until last year when she raised one. Asta was not broody last year as a three year old and a daughter of hers, Fina, tried to be broody last year and I didn't have anything to put under her so I put her in a crate to stop her from sitting. She hasn't gone broody this year. Forsaela came to me from Kathy. She was broody and raised two clutches of chicks as a one year old before a hawk killed her. I think hens raised by a momma are more likely to go broody, especially if their biological momma showed the trait.

Thanks for the thoughts on that, Mary. Maybe I'll just have to wait it out and hope one of my girls goes broody at some point. Sigh.... I think my best bet may be my new pullet, Hveiti, then. She was raised by my SBEL who is a brooding machine. Only problem is that she's wilder than wild.......dang.

Other Mary, Eldur is one great looker! His son Hraun, has also lost all of his tips of his comb this winter....nobody was left untouched from the cold this year, even my rose combs lost some of their little tips. Still have snow more than knee-deep in some places, so I am looking forward to when Spring gets here. Forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday is more snow
