Icelandic Chickens

What? A silkie that rejects chicks?

Yours are way cuter!

Sorry for having to be the one to tell you your hen *cough* is a roo.

I know you really wanted a mottled hen.

As for your plan: I think you should do both. Hatch some to sell as pairs, and auction some hatching eggs too.

I am not eating them, heck I bought eggs last week! Maybe I will hatch every second batch and sell the others on BYC!

BUYING eggs?!?!?! AAAGGGGHHHH!!

I sell my extra eggs to Echo Valley here in Auburn- if you need to buy eggs, you can pick them up there (or just send me a PM, I'll hook ya up free) Or do you have a more local source for 'real' eggs?

Keep an eye on CL, I see used show cages on there for decent prices every now and then.

Ok, about the babies. Blue Mama kicked her two babies to the curb this morning and ran back to her wooden eggs and started sitting. I had her in a small separate coop but she left the babies chilled and was pacing by the door. When I opened it she bolted straight for the big coop and her wooden eggs. I guess I put eggs ready-to-hatch under her too soon into her broody phase. No harm, No foul. Everybody's fine.

One of mine pipped internally but died without pipping externally. The first of mine to pip yesterday hadn't progressed in about 36 hours so I opened the hole a bit for it this morning. Within five minutes he had zipped on the opposite side and popped out. He's a tiny little thing but he was ready, no blood, no unabsorbed yolk, just a tiny baby unable to get out by himself. He is the dark baby in the pictures. So here's my little brood of seven Icelandic babies. No two the same but a couple of close ones.

This is the reddest chick I have ever hatched. I am really excited to see how it turns out!

Thanks for looking! I know I go on and on about the Icelandics but come on, this is better than the Rainbow Assortment at Ideal!

Kola is almost entirely black. She has just a few little specks of copper on her breast. I remember when she hatched, and some thought she would be blue, and I kept sayin' I think she is black .... nope, no blue! Yes, I bet your Tiny will be like Kola!

Mary.......they are gorgeous! Love the reddish one and the little black one! Maybe now you'll get that mottled hen!

Kathy..........WOW! They've matured beautifully! The roosters a so handsome! I hope you find a great home for them.

Mary,
I think Kola is a mix...... half chicken and half bird.

NOW she has taken to flying from one gate post (over 6 ft high) to the next, which is about 8 feet away. Honestly, this girl is just hillarious. I think she is teaching the other girls her stunts, too!
