Nope there is no standard. My first hen Lukka has hatched out every color of the rainbow, some crested, some not, most with yellow legs, some with slate (ok). She has only hatched one that looked like her. I have hatched dozens of Lukka eggs and so have others on BYC. That is what makes them so much fun for me.

Posting an update on the eggs given to us by The Warden at the last BYC meet up in Lafayette- I think I posted we had 7 eggs developing in my last update, but I unfortunatly was off by one, we have 6. They are all doing very well, showing lots of movement and veining!

We were just talking aout them yesterday, and realised, they are due to hatch HALLOWEEN!! How cool is that??!! Another reason to look forward to the end of this month!

Hi, I am also a nurse and also in Nor Cal with chickens. Small world!
Beautiful birds! Wonderful combs, and so interesting.
Best of luck with your Icelandic Adventure!

Good grief...we had a security breach in the baby brooder today! I went into the garage and found my week-old baby Icelandic on TOP of the brooder under the heat lamp! The baby had somehow managed to get out a small hole in the hardware cloth where a nipple waterer is supposed to go. How he got straight up and out with nothing to climb on is beyond me. Do you think he was trying to tell me that I need to lower the heat lamp? Look at his buddies huddled in the corner!

See the little opening behind his butt? How the heck did he do that?

Here's a couple of shots with the red lamp off. These guys never cease to amaze me. The hole has been patched by shoving a little stuffed animal in it. I am sensing a trip down to the barn tomorrow with the dolly to retrieve my big brooder.

Maybe the guys in the corner gave him a boost up?

Gotta love those Icelandics!

Doesn't surprise me .... nope, not a bit. These birds are not your ordinary chicken. No, not at all! I am tellin' ya, they are part "bird!" Today Kola flew over our heads from one pen gate to another ...... WHILE we were standing there! She flew like a bird. Honestly! Mike got out the tape measure, and it was nearly 12 feet. She flew 12 feet, over our heads!!!!!!
