Icelandic Chickens

ok thanks a lot I've got 90 in the bators now - yes I have to stay up all night for 3 days while they hatch so that I can put bands/food coloring all over them!

35 wheaten marans
1 blue wheaten marans
12 Icelandics
15 Welsummer
18 Splash marans
9 SPPR

No the auction was only for 6

Very amazing actually out of all these 90 eggs, I didn't have any that broke. People are really taking better care in packaging, it seems. I'm looking into producing foam egg shippers. I should be getting some samples in next week and plan to work with one of my factories to get them to be affordable

90? Yikes! I'd be in a panic. Actually, I am in a panic and I only have 21 in the incubator and over half of those I haven't candled yet! The hatching doesn't freak me out, just having adequate brooder and grow out space until Kelly tells me they are roos and I have to get rid of them. My nine Thanksgiving babies, referred to as "The Freaks" because they spent so many weeks crammed in a too small incubator, are my most recent graduates to free ranging. They took to it like a duck to water though. So I cleaned out the little coop they were in and moved the New Year's babies into it two days ago. They are a mix of bantam cochins, Icelandics, and olive eggers. I kept them confined to the top for a day then opened the door to the ramp yesterday. The blissfully ran up and down and dug in the sand all day in the enclosed run. In a few days I will open the pop door and let them come out and mingle with hens. They learn their free range skills running from my cranky blue Ameraucana, Mrs. Howell.

I called you yesterday Mary, but your home phone was forwarded to Michael's phone. I got a phone call shortly after I hung up with a Who's this?

And I don't think there's any doubt on the bantam cochins and who are the boys!

YES well the name is Cheryl Panicked Cohen...

I don't know what I was thinking. I should only be hatching what I need for my breeding programs at this point, but NOOOOOO I had to go fall in love with Icelandics and then my wellie girl laid her first egg and so I NEEDED to have more in my flock...Holy cow...

AND I'm going nutz keeping these "show" chickens clean till tomorrow:barnie

Sorry Kelly, we forwarded the phone the day before because we were waiting for a call and I was sick of being stuck in the house. Then we forgot to cancel it. Michael has ADD. Never trust that a message gets passed on, at least not until too late to call. Other than puttering about with the animals I'll be here today if you want to call me back.

I am pretty bummed about the MFC's all being boys. I may get some more eggs from Lynne and try again for at least one girl. I still think I have a trio of black barred split to buff barred and a pair of the the vice versa's. I may drag them in today for updated pics. Stand by to dash my hopes!

Cheryl, You have all the symptoms of being OCB, I have the same condition. It results in our home being filled with incubators, our chicks at times overflowing into the kitchen, and assorted oddly constructed outbuildings which leave our neighbors whispering and wondering just WHAT is going on
D.gif
! OCB people are great parents, business owners, artists, politicians etc and tend to be great at multi tasking and to a degree perfectionistic, while paradoxiically very nonconformist. Never heard of this condition? Well its a rare one so consider yourself extra special

. OCB, longform, is Obsessive Compulsively Blessed!

Without us Cheryl, the world would come to a complete STOP!

My dining room is all taped off ready for painting. So if you wanna chat, you're gonna have to come help paint!

All that crown molding is a PITA to tape off. Not to mention I had to empty the china hutches.

But at least all the hard stuff is done, the painting will be a snap now. Did I mention that I HATE painting?

I'll be checking in here and there so I'm available to dash your hopes!

I want to see the Icelandics too. I really hope I didn't give you back all boys!
