Its really great how you keep them all separated. I haven't had Icelandics long enough to have long covered runs and all, but mine are all separated according to line too and I only share to folks who keep the lines separated. Some say that they are all Icelandics, but the sources have got to be different where some lines are concerned. The intro of brown and white leghorns, as well as Salmon Faveroles has been documented. I know a real effort at preservation has been made and it is very very interesting reading but slow as I find info and translate it. The RALA line was collected from various flocks, the line from which Lyle B imported was sourced from an Island that was uninhabited for over 60 years, that lends great credibility to the integrity of the genetics because the importation of the leghorns came after that.

We know we have something special in these Icelandics anyway and my goal is to save and share them if and when possible with other preservationist minded people who are really committed to saving them in their pure form.

Thanks again!

You aren't the only one! Was the box damaged? We know it was thrown! We are going to do this till we get it right. Minnesota needs more Icelandics!

Good luck!

Mary

Interesting comment.

You're going to have to move some around Andy because Sigrid's second egg importation came from the same uninhabited area as Lyle's eggs. Isi is from that group and Lukka is from the RALA group.

Ok, I need some insight/advice. I successfully re-homed two/three Icelandic cockerels that I got from Cheryl, and kept this guy:

Once his brothers were gone, he has started standing off with my much larger and older Splash Marans cockerel, Lil' Joe, he is trying to crow, and having a hissy fit when I go to pick him up! He is only supposed to be 8 weeks old!! Pecking at me, wing flapping, etc. Jeesh, he was such a sweetie when his brothers were around. I have decided that if he attacks me, he gets held under my arm until I am good and ready to put him down, otherwise he gets ignored. This works with Lil' Joe, who basically always ignores me and stays away from me. (Of course, he grew up under a broody and the hens have let him have it when he misbehaves...)

Sound like a plan???

Thanks,
Dawn

Sigrid says she has never had a roo that was aggressive with humans but I did. I carried him around like a baby for 30 minutes at a time and couldn't break him. He went after me and every female that entered the yard. I re-homed him and he was good as gold for the new people. Maybe your little guy is just a little lost and lonely. I have found that my Icelandics do tend to keep to themselves when in a flock. I don't even know how they know! How old is your boy. I may have a girl the same age or close enough if you are interested. I am in Auburn.

Dawn, he's a looker! He almost seems like he'll be Mille Fleur patterned when he fully matures, that would be GORGEOUS!

When young cockerels start giving me the 'tude I snatch 'em up and cart them around the yard with me, holding their legs and stroking their beaks. Letting them know that YOU are boss. If they start acting up again when I let them go, well they get picked up again and cradled on their backs like a little baby. I've never had one who didn't eventually understand that acting bad means you get to spend time in the giant man's arms, something they definitely do not appreciate.

I have one more order of eggs to ship out, and then I am hatching for myself. Snow is laying and Romeo is mating.

I love the variety I have been getting here. Snow and Romeo are just perfect additions to my flock! I am excited to hatch more Icelandics!

Wow Kathy that is exciting. Crests may be on their way! A lot of the my girls the same age as Snow have started laying and my boys that age have definitely started mating. Crowing and wing dancing contests held daily! How many are you going to collect before setting or are you doing staggered hatch. When I first got my birds from Sigrid I put the eggs in the incubator everyday as they were laid. I was afraid I'd lose them. What a ridiculous few weeks that was!
