Icelandic Chickens

They did finally find the turkeys and deliver them.. one had died and several are weak but they are drinking so we have hope..

I can't believe my luck with the PO right now.. the Icelandic eggs from Kathy still haven't shown up, mailed 2 weeks ago today!! at this rate, the ones from Mary will be hatched before they show up!!

On a more positive note.. my one little poult that I did not think had a chance is steadily improving and has been moved from the ICU into a private room!! He is a little fighter!! I'm hoping it's a tom so I can have him be the farm mascot.. a hen would work too but not as showy..

Also have 3 pheasants out.. they sure do hatch slow!! another 1/2 dozen or so pipped but not a lot of action..

Sorry about the chick Mary... I'm glad we don't have rats like that around here!!

Just a quick fly-by to share some cuteness. I live near a Reindeer Farm and get to drive by these cuties every time I leave my driveway.

I was 8 minutes late for work, and at least 5 of it was spent parked in front of the pasture admiring (and photographing) these beauties.

Hi Kelly

Sorry about the chick Mary, that hurts like that. I like the idea of the cement !

I think that you got it covered now. I do plan on investing in a Havahart trap, or two, along the side of the coop and the run.

I have a zero tolerance policy on predators, domestic or wild.

My Mustangs went to another home when I was diagnosed with cancer, I miss them like you wouldnt believe, the stud I named Buddy because he was my buddy, was doing great under saddle, and the filly in front of me in the pic was nicely started in saddle also, the other two mares were brood mares. I am moving to a rural place about 12 miles east of where I am, next to state and federal forest land, it would be an incredible area for some of Michelles reindeer.

But the majority of livestock for me will be the chickens and some marine reef fish and critters.

Michelle is the law still that only Native Americans can raise reindeer in AK?

I have always loved them. Elegant looking creatures.

No, as a matter of fact this farm is owned by a lawyer, THE very same lawyer that fought the natives claim to any and all reindeer in the state, and won.

Reindeer are just domesticated caribou, which migrate thousands of miles each season. They get their speed from tendons that snap as the leg moves. This tendon makes a ticking noise as they walk. Listening to several of them moving at once sounds almost musical, like a rain stick that has all the little beads or seeds that trickle through the inside simulating the sound of rain drops.

They are smart and very docile, even the babies know basic hand signals at a few weeks of age. The elk on the farm are raised the same way but they are not tame enough to walk among, I have let my kids (ds was 6) walk among the 60 - 100 reindeer that make up this herd with no worries at all. they don't bite or kick and the nerves in their hornes are so sensative they don'e want to have them touched which means they are very careful to not touch a person with them either.

I know this farm exports to other farms in the lower 48 just in case Ryan has room in the yard for a reindeer or two...

Took the camera out after work this evening to get some pics.
Even I don't need Kelly to help sex these two!!!!!!!

Here is a little guy (?) enjoying the branch that fell this winter and I put into their pen as a jungle gym.

It ran the full length and did a flying leap! I love watching them!!

Seinna, The Other Mary

15 days since Kathy shipped the eggs to me and still they are lost...

One good thing has come of it though.. almost everyone at the post office knows who I am, that I am the chicken guy and they are all watching for the eggs..

I went in today and had half the front counter guys asking about the eggs and I wasn't even in their line!!

I guess we'll just treat this as an inadvertent science experiment like SteveH and his non turned eggs... wouldn't do it on purpose but since we don't have a choice...

If they ever do show up, we'll do our best to hatch them...
