Icelandic Chickens

Do you see the little yellow spot in this picture? That is one of Lukka's babies that flew the coop before Mama was ready for them to be outside. I just happened to hear peeping and found it, heading for the dirt road!

It was not an easy capture. We covered a lot of open range before I caught it.

I gave it a good look over as Lukka doesn't allow that.

Then I returned it to it's Mama who gave it a stern beatdown.

But before I had time time to get out the coop door it was heading straight out the pop door to freedom again.

Then I asked myself, "How do broody Mamas manage these things in Iceland without me?" I left them to work it out by themselves and came back to the house. All chicks were present and accounted for at bedtime.

Look at the beautiful color and pattern on the little orange chick in front!

When I went out to the coop this morning, Lukka was walking around with her wings flared out to scare me away. Two babies were on her back and managed to ride that way all around the coop before falling off. Wished I'd had my video camera with me!

Mary has Stella been talking to the chicks about the freedom of the open road??

I am kind of holding my breath, one of the pullets from the last group you sent to me is coloring up just like Lukka, she is absolutely gorgeous !!

I will, someday, get pics posted here, soon as I figure how, right now they hang up on the BYC site.

Oh I forgot to mention it, but Luna escaped yesterday over the 6 foot tall fence.

She willingly went back in for scratch though. She's starting to dig around in the nest boxes, so she'll be laying soon too.
