Icelandic Chickens

It means Beware of Fire. It's because she looks just like my good friend and co-worker who has silver hair, cut short, that she spikes up. When she gets it spiked up she looks just like Eldvör, and when you get her riled up, you really are playing with fire so that is how Eldvör got her name.

In other news, I have a strange cat prowling around the pasture. And my turkeys are ALL crazy!

I went out yesterday morning to find one of my turkeys that I hatched in April had spent the night outside. It seems I didn't see her before I shut up the door the night before. She is fine but was screaming pretty loud to get back in yesterday morning. As I opened the door, all the Icelandics and other chickens and turkeys came pouring out, she went zooming back in. I did see her out in the pen yesterday afternoon, but she didn't travel outside of the pen and she was one of the first ones in on the roost last night

Yesterday was perfect! A balmy 70-ish with bright sunshine and gorgeous blue skies.

Ya'all are welcome any time.

As promished here are pics of the Moms and babies.

Here is the Peach colored girl with her single chick. The wound on the side of it's head is healing nicely. If mama caused the wound they are over it now and the best buddies. They stay outside most of the day in their little fenced run.

Here it is meeting mama's friends from when she was a wild and free single woman.

Here is Miss Polaris and her four out of five chicks. The last one is pipped.

Here are the poop covered babies, looking good this morning!

I double checked on Skye and found this little guy kicked out of the nest and very cold. He was stuck so I gently helped him out and put him back under mama who readily accepted. She had two more just busting out of the shells under her. We have three eggs to go for a 100% hatch rate!

My Icelandics are the best free rangers on the planet... they dig and scratch EVERYWHERE... and when they see a bug... they are quick as lightning. I'm loving all of the variety with each one and such personalities. I'm thinking that I'm also going to keep my Blau (rosecombed) as a roo... Dexter is getting more beautiful everyday.

And Mary, I would love one of those Peach colored hens... she is almost as beautiful as Lukka.

Laugh all you want, but I think Lukka's babies are four pullets and a cockerel!

Close-ups:

Little white chick, kind of puffed up today. I hope it's ok.

And the roo, who looks like he is going to be gorgeous as a big boy! He may be a keeper.

I'll send you one if I have one this time around! I am over-the-moon excited about Miss Polaris's little black chick! The down is so soft and shiny. I love the dark ones for free ranging.
