Icelandic Chickens

Yes, Mary, those are from your originals. You can certainly get eggs from them anytime. Well, as soon as they start laying again!

Great. That will be my plan then. I won't keep any juveniles that I have now. And as soon as I get "old" stock eggs from you I will hatch replacements! I'll probably hatch all pullets since I'll be looking for roos!

Well, of course you will! That is how it always happens, isn't it!

That pullet doesn't look like she has wry tail to me. I've noticed with my flocks (not icelandics) that they will sometimes hold their tail sideways. (not sure why, I assume its a balance thing)
So watch her and see if she can straighten it out. If it's wry tail, she won't be able to straighten it.

I did hatch 1 barnevelder with wry tail from a different breeder and I culled him. So it is a fault that happens in every breed.

I was thinking the same thing, Kelly. Also, the pictures posted yesterday of the black rooster with silver hackles..... the first picture and the last picture show 2 different tail angels. I don't think that is wry tail. I should also mention that many times around the feeder my birds hold their tails all wonky-like.
Honestly, I don't think you have a wry tail issue there.

If, by chance, you do have one.... well, it is not always genetic either. If no one else has hatched wry tails from these same birds, I am inclined to believe it is something else.

They DO straighten their tails out from time to time, and then the tail will settle back to the tilt again.
At their age, I was just hoping it was juvenile muscles trying to hold up the newly (and large) sprouted tails.
Oh I hope you are right!!!!!!!!
THAT has given me an uplift!!!!!!!!
I am leaving this flock 'be' for another month or two, to see what happens.

Exactly, eveyone hold their horses & we waite & see.
I have e-mailed alot of breeders & friends asking Qs..and I awaite their experienced answers.
Seriously, my birds are 3 mo old, just recently their tail feathers grew very long, so maybe the muscles just are not strong enough yet.

Hi Robin,

its going to be interesting how much snow that we get here. And compare it to northern MI. Right now its major efforts all to get ready for winter. Has to be.

I wouldnt cull any before a year of age, we dont know a LOT about these !

Some things you can see early on and recognize, like frayed feathers, but on tail feather growth I really think that they deserve more time. Four or five years down the road we will know a lot more then we do now.

Life is good and better with Icelandic Chickens and Pack Goats !

When I pulled up to the farm tonight to put all the birds to bed, there was a red buick parked in the drive. (If you remember, the other night the neighbor had called saying that someone in a red buick had stolen a chicken..) I pulled in behind the car and got out.. There were two girls out in the field with all the birds.. not sure if they were chasing any or what but they came running to the car as I walked up to it.. The dad says hi... how are you? I say I'm wondering what they are doing on my property and if they are the same red buick the neighbor told me had stolen a chicken.. He says no.. they are just feeding them..

Seriously??? I told him I'd appreciate it if they would stop trespassing and not feed my animals. also mentioned he was lucky the cops weren't called on him.. I did write down his license plate and will report him if anything else comes up missing...

I still can't believe someone would just go on someone else's property and do whatever they felt like with the animals.. even if they didn't steal one the other day, feeding them???
