Icelandic Chickens

Good luck Chic in your search, look at the white Chantecler.

FWIW, the Icelandic Chicken was the only chicken in Iceland for a thousand years.

Food for thought.I have selected out three chickens from last years hatch for their growth, and this year will do much more, keeping the best growers, and then the best layers.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

I have 5 roosters, but am only gonna keep 4. The one I am not keeping (sadly) is the black and silver one. I can hardly wait until spring. My plan is to have 4 pens of Icelandics. Each will have 4 hens and 1 rooster. If I happen to hit the lottery, I will build a barn and fence in an acre or two for them.

This is the one I will part with (reluctantly). He, too, is beautiful and unique.

They are beautiful Kathy! I plan to keep Isi and 2 of the 3 that are growing out now. That will give me a 1:8 ratio which I think is good for my free rangers.

Very handsome roosters Kathy!! I, too, currently have 4 keepers: Audun (from The Sheriff hatched Mar. 2010), Boi (Ari/Anna or Asta-May 2011), Bjarthur (Ari/Asta June 2010) and Dreki (Audun/Anna-July 2010). Right now, the "B" boys are in a separate bachelor pad to keep them away from the young pullets. Audun doesn't bother the pullets (too busy with the more mature girls) and he keeps Dreki in check. The young girls know that if they hang around with Audun, Dreki can't/won't bother them. We'll see how everyone behaves/gets along when they are integrated, then I'll know for sure who will be around for breeding season!! I need to get some updated pics of the boys............

Wow Kathy! You are going to have some great variety - your boys are all so different.

Mary neglected to mention this, but I noticed when I was at her house earlier in the week. Those last chicks that she hatched were ALL crested. I couldn't find a single one that wasn't crested. Not only did that guy get a variety of colors, but crests too!

Well,...that was much more difficult than it should have been.....not much cooperation from the boys.....non-stop motion is not easy to photograph.....only the "big guys" wanted to have their pics taken.....so here they are....such as they were.....youngest to oldest..........

Well, I know what the detractors say., but having looked at all these pictures, and now having my own small flock, I can see the "breed" in them.

There really is something that sets them apart; the colours are all over the place, different combs etc, but you can tell them right away.
Either that or the macular degeneration has me seeing things that aren't there
