I let my Icelandics out free ranging for the first time yesterday, right away the hens were everywhere. They loved it. It was 50 degrees yesterday!

You folks are great to have morning coffee with !

But, I have learned, slowly, not to read a post before swallowing the coffee in my mouth, and never, ever, to open a post with both coffee and donut in the mouth !!!!

Yup Daron the next all black Icelandic rooster or hen that I see will be the first, havent seen a self black yet, a few with lined or colored capes, my Countess is black with a beautiful gold line cape, but she isnt a self black. I am curious what colors I will have from her and Blau and/or Bjorn. I think that the pattern genes over ride the self genes in them.

Much for us to find out about this wonderful breed, we are just in the adolescence of learning about them. I do know that I
am going to be selecting for smaller combs, and hope that in doing so I dont select away from other traits. But I will be selecting for more crests and leg feathering, and smaller combs while keeping up the excellent egg production and ranging ability the flock has.

Kate I am sure you can find something to get you back in his good graces ! This big white guy with the leg feathering is just what you need and Isi jr is a proven flock master, guardian, breeder, and watches over the flock and calls them when there is new food, grsshoppers or me bringing treats. And, he is gorgeous !

Mary O, let us know on that DNA please, wont sleep all weekend wondering and praying for a girl or two ! Gotta believe prayers will be, but still got human worry in there.

Will keep lots of positive thoughts on it !!

Daron, I am loving these warmer temps too. I was able to enlarge the Icelandic pen yesterday. I finished it this morning and when I let them out of the coop they ran out and stopped where the fence used to be and would not go any further

I am sure we will be getting payback later for this nice weather.

Those other dates I posted were not accurate.

For what it's worth..... (think Farmer's Almanac)....
Llewellyn's 2012 Moon Sign Book is available for "preview," online. (different pages on different sites) I found some of the pages with dates for "fruitful," but not all of them. Those are the ones missing here....
Best dates to hatch (go back 21 days for the date to set chicken eggs) 2012:
January 7-8, 16-17, 25-26.
February 4-5, 12-13, 21-22.
March 2-3, 11-12, 19-20.
April
May
June 1-2, 9-10-11, 19-20, 28-29.
July 7-8, 16-17-18, 25-26-27.
August
September 1, 9-10,18-19, 27-28.
October 6-7-8, 15-16, 24-25.
November 3-4,12-13,20-21, 30
December 1-2, 10-11, 18-19, 28-29.

Kate how old is your hen?

They will keep on changing colors right through their molt, they can be one color before they molt and come out of the molt quite different.

I am watching these three in the brooder and notice some things each day, and I am wondering if the feathered legs is tied in with other feathering? It seems that they have more feathering, and more little 'puff' feathers, all three. Its too early to say what , they are going to have to be grown out.

I cant help but wonder if they and the Hedemora dont share some ancestry, although the Hedemora I have seen pics of have clean legs.

We shall see.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Oh, well she's only a little pullet, hatched in July so I guess she can change then. But she really is a solid black right now.

But not all Icess have feathered legs, so there could be some relationship!?!?!?
