Roosters are okay too, we all gotta eat !

Besides dressing out extra roosters is the only way that we can tell if our line is a true dual purpose one !

There is a definitive difference that I see in growouts in my small flock, so I am trying to pick among the growthiest ones for breeding stock, Bjorn is the biggest of my roosters from 2011, and I have the growthiest hen, Birgitte. A real good chance of them being paired along with other larger hens. The other rooster , a feather legged one is not the larger of them but he will be mated with several large hens. I can see him being mated with Brigitte after she has some eggs with Bjorn.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Jake, The one thing that I see with my Icelandic cockerels is how much their place in the pecking order affects their size. In my large broods, the size difference among with cockerels was noticable, with the most dominant having the first choice of feed etc and therefore growing larger. When I would cull the larger, more dominant, the smaller would have a dramatic size increase. This is purely ancedotal and based on one year so may not mean a thing....just an observation. There is a significant size difference between the males and females.....I need to get weights on mine...that is something I haven't done yet.

Icelandic Attitude of the Day (cough...stolen one.......cough) - 2 weeks old

I just love the coloring coming in:

Other Icelandics (that would cooperate for pictures)

Coloring on 2nd stolen one - it didn't want to cooperate, obviously. Icelandic in the back, Isbar in the front:

This one I'm thinking is a pullet - still has the teeniest comb. (Mahonri - both whites are boys)

And for Mary - The Isbars. This one I'm not sure on sex, leaning towards female though.

This one I've had pegged as a boy from the day he hatched - pretty obvious now:

Nice pictures, Kelly. I especially like that first photo! That next to the last picture..... those are sure some thick looking legs.

Jake, It is so nice to hear from you!

I need to take some recent pictures. Gotta work this evening, maybe this weekend....

Beautiful pics--or rather, beautiful birds! I love following this thread, even if it will be awhile before I have my own Icelandics--and Isbars! I am feeding vicariously off you. Hope you don't mind!

Don't want to pressure you in any way Jake. BUT, STAY HERE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!! We all wish you would stay Wish my son would allow me to live with him. I surely miss him even tho we mainly talked thru his closed bedroom door. It was mighty nice knowing he was there.
