Icelandic Chickens

Mary your pigs are very smart, they can learn very quickly that a behavior has unpleasant results, I would suggest a small hand shocker, along with a strong 'NO' when he starts to do it. Check your feed stores, its a simple solution, and with pigs a quick one.

I didnt realize he was a gilt, I thought that you were going to have LOTS of little piggies around and about !

The pic of your barnyard, except for the emus kind of has an Ozark hill farm touch to it, makes me a bit homesick. I cant quite picture that one in Alaska.

Sun is shining here, another moderate day about to happen, I am enjoying each and every one as a gift. Alaska has set snow fall and minus temp records this year. Michelle is in one of the most moderate areas, as it usually is.

I don't want to seem ungrateful for the nice winter we have had but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to snow!!!!!!!! By the way, the eggs have very active babies moving in them! I think they are all going to be live wires!

I wonder if you can train pigs like a dog? When my dog, Shadow, used to jump up on me as a puppy - I would push my knee out hard and say a firm NO. Didn't take her long to figure it out. It worked really well for her, but you have to have the ability to shove your knee out.

I also refuse to pet her until she's calm - I won't encourage her to be hyper. So now when she wants to be pet, she comes up to me and sits.

Mary, I have just read your post above about Prentiss jumping. Once upon a time I had a horse that would rear ALL the time. I tried every trick in the book to break him of this habit and nothing worked. We baffled many really good trainers. Then I decided to teach him to do it on command, so I could get him to rear as a centerpiece to our 4-H parade display. It was easy to teach him a command, I just said it every time he was getting ready to rear and within days I would say the word and up he would go.

The added benefit to this trick? Because I had given the trick a name I could tell him NOT to do it.

I'm not sure if something like this might work for you but I thought I'd share, just in case.

That is SO COOL!

Ok, I guess I don't know my pig terms very well. I received a PM about it that cracked me up, and now Jake. So here's the deal. It's a breeding pair of pigs, one male, one female! Yikes. I thought I did my homework!

Thanks for the tip Michelle. That would come in handy if anyone invites us to be in a parade.

Until then I can train him from my HovaRound while my hip fracture heals.

I can use the stun gun easier from a sitting position too.

Raising pigs is so easy.

Mary. I am concerned about the Kella Pic of the Week. The other girls are probably beating the tar out of her as soon as you take the camera in the house. You know how girls can be, right? Just sayin........
"Ozark Hills look" to my place, huh? That was actually what I was going for.

Kathy, can you send me the plans and materials list for a ghetto coop please? I need a couple of those dotting the landscape. I am partial to the red one. Kelly needs a couple too for her turkeys and perhaps one to duck into to get away from the bees.

Just good friends lookin' out for each other on the Icelandic thread.

[/quote] It's true. The snow is well above my knees but we've had so many warm days followed by cold that it's very crusty and hard to work in. Luckily the dog keeps the path to the barn packed down. The chickens and turkeys have spent the whole winter in the barn. We had a freakishly early cold snap that cemented the rolls of fencing to the ground and we are still waiting for it to thaw so we can get the runs built. Usually the snow blows away so one warm day thaws things enough to get them off the ground. Thie excess snow makes excellent insulation so the ground has stayed frozen solid. But it's almost March, the end is near, and the projects continue. Happy Thursday :D

Dang! Now she tells me! We just had a toilet replaced and the old one sat in our deck for five days before the new one was installed. The plumber offered to haul it away and I agreed never knowing I would need it!

For the true Ozark Hills look, you must first gather toilets and tubs and arrange in the area. You do that, and then I will send you the blueprints for the ever so famous ghetto coops.

Looks like we are in for it too. I am so ready for some nice warm rays of sunshine.

Mary, I love the picture of your farm with all the different varieties of animals. I do hope and pray that you will get the issues with your leg/back resolved.

Kathy, sounds like you have been very busy. At least it was great weather for you.

Daron, updates, pics??
