The most amazing athletes in the world, the Alaska huskies defy all the odds and cheerfully run 1100 miles in 8.5 days, most of which will be through sub-zero temperatures. Amazing!
DH just told me that next year we get to be dog handlers at the start
My DH's hobby is photography so we have a nice camera and I have someone to "tell me what to do". My DW says we can go up for it one year. Cabelas has nice Iditarod tours, I hope they still do. We "watch" it on the internet every year. Now they have the GPS, sometimes I miss the old spreadsheet method of "watching".
Oddly enough, that statement fits so many aspects of living here. We don't get much sleep in winter because there is so much to do (and it all takes longer in the snow) and we don't sleep much in the summer because the sun is up so we can get so much more doneCongrats Joyous !!!

Both races are seriously harsh, long hard days with very little rest, sleep deprivation is the norm, as one of the Lady winners said at the end of hers in Nome, " if I were to die right now that would be okay ".
It used to be run in 13 or more days, now they are shaving minutes off the nine day mark.
The Yukon Quest takes longer, it has 3 mtn ranges on it.
Everyone who finishes either race is a winner.

Lifew is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens, but even they dont help on the hardest races in the world.
Seriously tho, itis one tough mother of a race, I have so much respect for the select few that can get themselves through all the challenges the trail can throw at them. Odd # years they do one trail, even numbered they do another, slightly different path. Met a man in his 70's the other day, he finished a couple years ago but wants to do it again to take the other trail. In his 70's!
