Icelandic Chickens

Hello Icelandic enthusiasts,

We are new to the Icelandic chicken world, and new members of BYC.

At present we have two ~4 day old chicks we incubated from eggs we received from Lyle Behl. It was our first incubation
attempt, and a learning process. We started with 18 eggs, 10 at lock down, one pipped but did not zip, two healthy hatches,
and seven developed but dead embryos. The two eggs we got to hatch have the blue gene.

We have identified adjustments we need to make and are looking forward to round two incubation with a shipment of eggs on
the way from Mary at Buck 'n Run Ranch.

Just thought we would introduce ourselves to the Icelandic community.
Posts from this account may come from either one or the both of us.

..watch out, icelandics are highly addictive.!

Yes, we are seeing the habit forming aspect of this!

Where in AK are you?

I will be near Caswell, just north of Willow. As I understand there is another flock near Fairbanks. I am heading on up in July.

Looks like AK is going to be a proving ground for Icelandics ! I strongly reccomend geting the digital thermometer from Brinsea, shipping eggs that far already puts them into jeopardy, we really have to be on top of the temps and humidity. I am bringing my small flock and hoping to get a hatch or two once I am settled in up there.
We are near Fairbanks, about five hours from where you will be settling in.
Hope your travels go well. Are you driving up the ALCAN? If so, Liard Hot Springs in BC is a very worthwhile stop.

Thank you for the advice on the thermometer. We have a digital thermometer/hygrometer on the way from Incubator Warehouse. Maybe we should order the Brinsea too.
It would be nice to have some instruments we could trust. Redundancy seems wise too. Paying attention to humidity was one of our failings on round one. Embarrassed
to admit we did not have a hygrometer, just followed the instructions in the LG we have. It was during the incubation that we found this site and began our real education.

Everybody:

Any advice and guidance is welcome. We want to be successful at building a flock of these beautiful and intriguing birds.

Thank you for all of the warm welcomes!
