Idaho?

Hi all, it's been a while since I've said Hi.

I just thought I'd tell you about the CSU Chicken State University Thread. Search for it... it's growing every day but well well well worth the read. Covering one breed at a time you'll see pics and get real judges comments on those birds. They're on Rocks right now and have "finished" New Hampshires.

But mostly...."HI everyone! Let's get through winter and raise some chicks!!" Yay!

Sounds interesting, thanks for the tip!!

Here are pics of my chicks... I was able to get my little broody bantam cochin pullet to take them, I put one under her when they went into lockdown, and the other 2 were easy to get under her... She even got a name out of the whole thing... Boys named her "Sweetie" after seeing how cute she is with those chicks... I'm feeling pretty happy that I got 3/3 I put into lockdown hatched... especially given the circumstances and soo many of the others were clear or had early blood rings (thinking because of the cold)

Is the pic really that bad?? lol.... hello Idaho??
Actually really really cute! Was showing my DH how large those chicks were compared to you banty hen.

I have TWO broody orpington hens right now, both in the same pen. I wasn't going to start incubating, even, till next month due to the cold cold weather. These gals are DETERMINED and losing weight. One egg under each hoping that they'll hatch, survive and break broody. (Two weeks to go. Haven't candled, maybe today.)

It's the first time I have had serious LF broodies; I always wondered if I would need to get some banties to help me... plus I enjoyed concocting that as an excuse for more birds. My two broodies were taking away my excuse... your picture brings me right back to it. Ha ha.

Saw your post over at CSU. I am so hooked. Personally I can't wait till they get to Orpingtons, even though there is a whole lot out there to read about them.

Ok so I was talking with my dad about my chickens today when I went to check on them and visit and he said my current rooster (which I am replacing) has been walking with a limp the past couple of days... Any ideas as to what happened? He said he doesn't know what happened.

First thing I would do is check his feet- look for swelling, one foot looking different than the other, check the bottom pads of his feet for redness. He could have bumblefoot, a staph infection from a scrape or cut in his foot. If you do not see anything going on with the feet, try giving him vitamins in his water, to help if there is an upper leg or hip injury, sometimes that helps them heal themselves if it is minor. There is a member on here "Speckledhills", she knows everything under the sun about foot or leg injuries, her siggie has links to a podiatry page that is very helpful :) You could also pm her, she really loves chickens and healing, and I am sure she would respond to help you out.

Edit--here is the link to her podiatry page : https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/

Kalalyn I LOVE the coop in your avatar :)
