Our city council met tonight and read an chicken ordinance for review,

The ordinance they read tonight went as follows:

5 hens NO ROOSTERS
Permit required to be purchased at city hall for $10 per bird
Proof of Vaccines
10 ft set back from neighbors property line
Coop up to 32 sq ft (4x8) and no taller than 5 ft
1/4 mile buffer from any commercial hatchery capable of hatching more than 1 million chicks yearly

They voted to table the ordinance till next meeting on 4-16-13 they will vote on it then.

I guess that's better than nothing, but it still seems a little over the top, $10/bird and proof of vaccines??? Sheesh!!

We are gonna have to ask about that they don't require that the dogs have proof of vaccines.

I'm refining my breeding pens so I have three one year old laying hens for sale. Dark egg layers used in my olive egger breeding program. Wheaten marans / black tail buff marans cross. 30.00 for all three. Very good layers.

WELCOME to all newbies to the thread!!! and... HOWDY to everyone else, including the Lurkers (such as myself).

Just wanted to announce that I will be making the trip to Chickenstock with mys sis (Mo5C) and my youngest son. I have spots available for carpooling. Here is a breakdown of costs and my traveling plan if anyone is interested in joining us for the trip! (will also post in the Chickenstock thread)

Friday, May 3rd : Depart Nampa/Caldwell in the evening as soon as I can get away from work. Worst case would be around 6pm, hoping for 5 or earlier. traveling through Boise, can pick up people on the way...
Friday, May 3rd: Arrive in Idaho Falls around 10pm ish (4 hour drive + rest stops)

Sat, May 4th: 10:45 am ish - Attend a day filled with CHICKENS and fun!!!

Sat, May 4th: Evening drive home.

Cost per person with 1 additional adult: Traveling expenses $40, Hotel option A = approx $65, arranging own hotel room @ Candlewood. Hotel option B = (all sharing 1 room, 3 beds) approx $40 plus free breakfast @ Hilton.
Cost per person with 2 additional adults: Traveling expenses $50, Hotel option A = $35ish (no breakfast - 2 rooms at Candlewood)
Cost per person with 3 additional adults: Traveling expenses $40, Hotel option A = $23 ish (all 3 additional sharing 1 room with 2 beds at Candlewood) Hotel option B = approx $40 (Hilton express, 1 room 3 beds)

Everyone is responsible for their own meal expenses. I plan on doing a mix of brown-bagging and eating out/vendors.
The number of additional carpoolers will determine which vehicle I will take. (Subaru wagon vs. Suburban)

$10 per bird!!?? Do they realize that's 4 times the cost of most birds' purchase price??! And that chickens on average have much shorter lifespans than dogs & cats? Should you really have to register each time you get a new bird that is going to mingle only with other birds you own in your own backyard? Town officials wouldn't even be able to tell individual birds apart if they were the same breed.
$10 per property would seem much more appropriate.

I don't know that I agree with all vaccines. Chicks vaccinated for Marek's put others who aren't at risk, from what I understand. What do you do if you want to add in an adult bird later who didn't have a specific vaccine as a chick?
It seems like backyard flocks in residential neighborhoods would present a very small risk for disease spread. If the town council believes that some vaccines would be necessary, perhaps they could agree that the only mandatory ones would be ones for diseases that could possibly cross over to people?? (I don't even know if there are some that are commonly used that fit this category, though.) I wonder if the council is just trying to apply an idea (vaccinating) that's useful with other types of pets that are much more likely to mingle (ie. dogs & cats), but it actually may not be a very positive or needful practice with a small backyard flock...
