Morning all, We decided to proceed on a new project bird so will be letting letting go of our Silver pencilled Wyandotte bantam line. Not enough pen space for all... There are 3 chicks left 2 -8 days old that need to find someone to love on them. 2 look to be females. If you can't have the male, that's fine...They are free, just PM me if you want them.

My Blue Partridge Brahma have them. I still love my big huggable monsters just the same Can't show them anyway.

Just conducting a census in the northwest, do you (or anyone you know) raise Langshans in either bantam or large fowl? If so please let me know what variety either here in thread or via PM. Trying to get an idea how many are out here.

Ok I have yet another problem with my hens... My Uncle was helping a friend out that couldn't keep their chickens and talked my mother into taking them, even though we didn't have the room. With careful selection (I had several butchered) I made room for them. Now the two Leghorn hens he gave me have pale combs and wattles, but they have no signs of any bug infestations, the combs just stay flopped over flat to their heads (or as flat as a hens comb can get to her head). What do I do? They just look miserable. Any advice would be very much appreciated, I tried looking it up on here and on google but on BYC I kept getting an error and try again later thingy and google wasn't much more helpful. I swear never again am I accepting (without a thourough check over of the chicken first) rescue chickens, this makes the third set of rescue chickens that I have had that have gotten sick. I am just so frustrated I am about ready to cry.

There is probably a million and one ways to introduce new birds. This is what we do here.... A pale face would not worry me until the following is done. First off if I hear a rasp, sneeze, cough, see a sniffle they are culled. When we bring in new chickens here we have a quarantine area that is well away from the rest of the flock. The newbies are always fed last and I always wear a different set of shoes than worn with my flock. Each night they are sprayed with oxine, after feeding and caring for the new ones. They are in cages where no germs can float through the air via wind or dust to the rest of the flock. Day 1 the new birds are given electrolytes and red cell brand vitamins and treated for external parasites. Day 2 they are wormed. Day 3 started on 16 cc per gallon denagard for 5 days (add sugar, molasses or corn syrup as it is quite bitter, refresh every day). Day 8 given probiotics, vitamins, and electrolyes. Day 10 rewormed, retreated for external parasite and given vitamins and probiotics. Light is given at 16 hours per day to get their hormones rolling and redden up the face. They are then given vitamins and probiotics every 4th day for the rest of their lives. After 21 days a cull bird from my flock is introduced to them. After another 21 days, If my bird gets sick both are culled. If the new bird gets sick both are culled and mine is sent to the lab to see what is going on with my flock. If both are okay they are introduced into the flock. Not only am I sure they are healthy but they have a new friend to hang with while going thru the pecking order. Since our garage is where we keep chicks during hatch season, we can only introduce new birds in the fall...
We lost a flock that cost us over 5000 to replace by introducing a new bird right into their living quarters. It was devastating as many were my buddies. I had to disinfect everything and wait an extended amount of time before bringing in the replacement flock. arg... Best wishes to you!

Thank you for the advice ChickenHill, that is an awesome idea. I just wish my dad had room in his shop to quarantine the birds, his shop is full at the moment so they will probably just get culled. Is it ok to eat a sick chicken after they are culled(of course they will be cooked)? I was thinking of making homemade gluten free Chicken noodle soup. Marcie, I do seperate the older hens from the bantams, but in the evening when I let them out to freerange they intermingle. Tonight I went all over the pasture looking for Xavier Cole and you will never guess where I found him...the same spot where I found storm hiding the other night, silly chickens. Dad won't let me make a bantam area for them to free range so they go out with the big girls. I am keeping an eye on them when I let them out from now on, not only because of that but there have also been hawks in the area.
