Idaho?

Whoohooo!! More idaho people! Yeah!

I love having my freezer camp boys running around the farm all summer. They really keep the bugs down and I feel better processing them in the fall knowing that they had a happy life full of all the things chickens enjoy. But yes, when you have what looks like a mass swarm of cockerals of various ages running towards you at top speed with their wings flapping and their eager beaks open in excitement wondering if you are bringing them food....it can be intimidating if you aren't used to it.

My name is Beth and I live in Harpster, Idaho which is North Central... just north of the Salmon river. South Fork of the Clearwater river is home and towns in this area include Elk City, Grangeville, Kooskia, Kamiah. Lewiston is the nearest "big town"... where a person goes to get a McDonalds, CostCo, clothes shopping, etc. We are very rural... you have to get used to driving everywhere to get anything. Lots of trips to Spokane, Boise, Missoula....

I have 31 chickens from Pawtraitart, 27 Blue Orpingtons and 4 FCBM. I have two other smal flocks, one is a collection of 9 mixed breeds and one is a collection of 8 heritage breeds... my fave out of all are the gold laced wyandotte hen and the Orpington Roo who is cross between Buff and Blue. He is so gorgeous. Each year I also raise at least 25 meat birds, used to be Freedom Rangers but this year it will be all the extra cockerels from pens. Most of my birds "free range" either totally free or within electronetting. It is a joy to have the older ones putzing around.

I craved talking chicken to people. I've raised them for 6 years now. I sell the extra eggs and incubated my first batch this year for a friend. Awesome.

I just became a Master Gardener through the UofI out of Moscow Idaho. Gardening is my other passion!! I think I have a lot in common with many of you.

Hope to get to know more of you. Been on the site since 2008, even though I don't say much.

HI!! Beth

Would love to see pics of your buff/blue orp roo... It is soo pretty up there where you live, love central Idaho...
I would really like to try my hand at incubating soon, too... what kinds of chicks did you hatch??
A Master Gardener?? Cool!! Like Lisa said, now I know who to ask my gardening questions!!
WELCOME!!! So glad to have more people popping in!!! I knew there had to be some IDaho people with big flocks and lots of experience=)

My name is Susan and I live in Hauser which is about 15 min outside of Coeur d'Alene. I'm new to chickens, but rapidly developing an understanding of Chicken Math. I have 5 hens, 6 pullets, 1 roo, 4 cockerels (3 of which were supposed to be pullets...learning lesson!) and I'm probably picking up another pullet tomorrow.

I also have a husband, daughter, grumpy old man cat, and our Vizsla. In the pasture we have four Angora goats and a llama. I'm a knitter, spinner and dyer and sell my fiber online and at local shows. I love to garden too, but passionatly hate weeds. It gives me such satisfaction to give them to the chickens!!!

What kinds of chickens do you have?? I give my weeds to the chickens, too=) At least they like them!
Coeur d'Alene?? Wow it is pretty up there!!
WELCOME!!!!

Wow I love to hear about people! We have a cabin in the Trail Creek area---north of Sun valley on the way to Mackay/Challis. LOVE central Idaho, my very favorite country right there, we like to drive over th Challis and Salmon and go camping and fishing/ LOVE to garden, that would be awesome to be a Master Gardener! Now I have a good person to ask questions....haha

I like to incubate eggs too, and have some cute girls I just got this year from pawtraitart also. Looking forward to my first dark brown eggs.

You have a cabin?? It's been a long time since I've been up there, but it is SOOO pretty!!

Could you post a link for your yarn that you sell? I like to knit in the cold months

I will check it out!

The shop is www.shootingyarn.etsy.com! It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay empty right now, I've been trying to get things done on the "farm", we have a 1 3/4 acres, so I haven't been as timely listing as I hould be. I don't even think there's any yarn in there. I have family in town this week, so chances are it will be next week by the time I list stuff.

It is fun up there, we go several weekends in the summer, not far from Mt Borah, pretty area for sure. I like the pass over Trail Creek on the way to SV, very very pretty, esp in the Spring when the waterfalls are still coming down.

WELCOME!!!!

I've got:

Hens:
Bridget, Australorp
Cordelenna, Red Star
Noisy, all black EE who looks like she's a Ameraucana but puts out a brown egg
Golden Feathers, a buff Ameraucana
Snow, a white Ameraucana

Roo:
Moe the Roo who is Snow's guy and is a white Ameraucana

Lucy the Light Brahma pullet and Houdini the RIR Cockerel, who are inseperable :)

The other pullets:
Summer, a Welsumer
Liberty, a BLRW
Zebree, a Barred Rock
Topaz, a Red Star
Pretty, a Black Sex Link
And just got this morning from pips&peeps a Silver Sussex who hasn't been named yet

The cockerels who were SUPPOSED to be pullets:

Owen, an EE who will stay because he's gonna be gorgeous as long as he's nice....
Hinky, an EE with a crossbeak
Red, a RIR
The last two are probably headed to freezer camp... That's a lotta roo otherwise.

Here's my weed setup, I call it Chicken Salad Bar! I stuff them all in a bin with some dirt on the bottom and fill it with water. Keeps them fresh and they eat more of it.

Awww I LOVE the chicken swarm! I can feel the love headed my way when they come flapping. lol :p I have a few grandkids that scream like mad though so I understand what you mean! I loved your place. There were chickens everywhere, every nook and cranny. It was awesome :) There is no way I would try to count how many birds there were out there ;)
