Sorry to hear about your loss. We had aussies that did not bother the chickens once they became adults. They figured out the chickens were part of the family and ignored them. Hopefully yours will do the same!

Thank you. So sad seeing that little lady like she was. Just feel bad being as it's our job to protect them and we really failed at that. 1st time is an accident though so as long as it doesn't happen again.
I hope he grows up to be great with them.

How did you like having aussies? This is our first herding breed and aren't too sure what to expect except what we've read! We adopted him from the shelter so he is mixed with something (he has a long curled tail) so we aren't sure what but he has the fur and colors of an aussie.

Sheesh... sorry about the problems with dogs.. when I was growing up, we had a dog that ate chickens, it was very frustrating, had to watch him close and make sure none of the chickens were out when he was loose... Loved the dog. but he made me sooo mad sometimes and ate more than his fair share, even if it was only a couple!!

Newtochix.. can't wait to see pics of your chickens!!

Chickenhill... would love to see pics of your chicks, too!!

Won't be able to check for a few days... I have an online class I have to do for work that I need to get done in this next week and the only time I have to do it is at night... so see ya'll in a few days , unless I get it done sooner!!

OH!!!!

Almost forgot!!!

We went out to birdguy's place on Monday evening and saw those ADORABLE baby pigs... OMGoodness!! I have never seen a baby pig in real life, and they are amazingly cute, and cuddly, to boot!! I held one for a little while and it fell asleep while I was holding it, and then they made the cutest little oinkie noises... too cute!! And then there were the ducks and turkeys and goats and guineas and of course the chickens!! Awesome place, thanks again Shawn!!

Had to get on for a minute and say YAY!!! Yesterday when I was at work, my blue orp laid her first egg!! Granted it's a cute little pullet egg, but an egg, nonetheless!!

Good luck with the class!

Thank you!! I have to recert every 2 years, so hopefully won't be too bad, it's just the time...

Yikes! It took me almost a half hour to catch up!!! I've been so busy with work, family in town and now a week working at the North Idaho Fair before it starts! I'm entering some eggs this year, let's hope they do well. My "we're not sure if she's an EE or Ameraucana" girl lays really nice lighter blue eggs so I'm going to enter a dozen of hers! Honestly, she loooooks pure, but I don't think where she came from would have had pre ones, so we'll never know!

A half hour?? Have there been that many posts?? Haha, that's good!!

When you enter eggs at the fair, I'm assuming it's for color?? What kind of EE/Amer is she?? Would love to see pics=)

SusanRenee - Good luck at the fair with your eggs! Love the colors of EE/americana's eggs. The black wyandotte bantams we have lay huge eggs for their size. Poor little girls lol

Chicks hatching this weekend - Love to watch the new life emerge :) not sure how well it will go, the power went off for 7 hours a few weeks ago.

Anyone going to the Western idaho fair to look at the chickens? Here's the posted chickie schedule. Rooster crowing contest is tonight at 8p - Monday poultry showmanship at 10:00 Poultry Quality at 1:00 wed open class poultry ( this is the for the APA, I believe) at 11:00 friday rooster crowing contest again at 7. We have one that would rate right up there in the roo crowing contest!

I have never showed eggs.... found this in North idahos fair site:
WHAT THE JUDGES LOOK FOR WITH
EGGS

CLEANLINESS: Eggs must be clean; may show
small specks, stains or cage marks that do not
detract from general clean appearance of the egg
EGG SHAPE: Egg shapes should be
approximately the usual egg shape.
SHELL TEXTURE: May have rough areas that do
not materially affect shape or strength.
RIDGES: Should not materially affect shape or
strength.
SHELL THICKNESS: Should appear thick
enough to withstand reasonable handling without
breaking; in all cases, the shell must not be
broken.
BODY CHECKS: A body check is an egg which
looks like the shell is cracked, but is actually still
intact.

The aussies are really smart and love nothing more to please except to herd. Alot of people will use shock collars, we used a harmless tool. It is a device that omits a sound that only they can hear. It will catch their attention, stop them in their tracks. You may want to use one for your dog.
Here's a story on an aussie we had to show you their heart and loyalty. We used our cattle to train them on. Ole Red Dog Roy, one of our studs, was a classic. The boys had strapped a dummy steer head to a flatbed truck and were practicing steer wrestling. They would drive the truck down the long driveway, when the truck passed the boy on the horse they would launch off their horse and grab the horns of the dummy. Roy, the aussie, had learned to keep the steers straight for the boys when they were practicing with lives out of the chute. We assume that is what he was trying to do while they practiced with the truck. Poor Roy was in the wrong place at the wrong tome and they ran over him. It hurt his hip pretty bad. After a visit to the vet Roy was to stay stationary for a few days. I brought him in the house, he hated that. Couple days later he was still pretty soar and not wanting to move. The guys were out sending the heard thru the chutes for their worming. Roy heard them and oh mu gosh the howling began! 1/2 hour of that and I opened the door. That dog drug himself to the chute to help the guys. He was the opposite of most dogs. Most will play it up with an injury, he tried his hardest not to look soar so he did not have to go in the house and could do what he loved...
