I have a couple of Bantam chickens and we had the grandsons over for Father's Day yesterday. I told them not to go in the coop because I didn't want the chickens running around and getting too hot. Of course, I went outside and there were the two little boys chasing my chickens.

I think neighbors heard me yelling two counties away. Those boys disappeared for a good ten minutes. I'm going to try freezing some water to help them (chickens not boys) get through this Oklahoma heat. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have been forcing my family to drink lots of soda so I can keep the 2 litre bottles to freeze for the chickens! LOL! Right now with our Bi-Polar, Utah weather....It was freezing this weekend, rained all SUnday and SNOWED in the mountains!!! I know....Anyway! I worry about the coop stayig cool cause it is on the side of the house in the sun....but the girls have a lot of "cool" spots to stay during the day, like the cool cement under our porch chairs under the deck, next to the house. I could put a bottle there. Most of our back yard is shaded by our HUGE tree, including the built in swing set/play thing...and 2 girls can fit under the under side of the slide...I think I'll put one there too. And then right under the tree they love to sit around the trunk between the big roots, I can put a couple around there and some in the coop.

I just did this!!! I made two for each of my coop/runs. I was really worried about my new Silkies but now they have a little blue cool room to rest in and my big hens in my big coop/run have a bigger cool room with radiant foil on the top too. And its in the shade so I would think they would stay cool. Thanks for the idea

We position the water sprinkler where it waters a flower bed and the chicken run. The chickens love it and look forward on being watered down.

118 yesterday. I'm going to try it. However, not sure how long the ice will stay frozen in this heat, haven't had luck with the frozen bottle trick, it thaws withing a couple hours. I'll let you know how it works in EXTREME desert heat.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I am going to put a blue ice in each nest box. It's really hot in there!

Heres another idea i got from the backyard poultry magizine..

Ok so instead of throwing out your waterbottles just fill them up half way and put them in the freezer until they are rock soild. then add then to the inside of the waterer and place in a shady area. This will keep them cool and hydrated!
