Ideal Poultry

chicks should not be shipping in this heat. I live in TX and its way too hot. I think Ideal is south of me and probably hotter than it is here, and its been over 100 for over 50 days.

I got 14 from Ideal 3 yr ago in July, all were fine. but 3 yr ago it was NOT this hot.

We did have HOT temps and I don't know how they would survive it but I guess I had some good postmasters being kind to baby chicks on the way up here! Also there were some Gro-Gel in there as well for them to peck at.

I didn't think they would have survived the trip but they did!

I too have ordered from Ideal. I am in Texas and was worried about a shipment I received July 8 the "beginning of our triple digits" All of mine survived and are doing well. I ordered Wellsummeers and Marans.

I don't think chicks should be shipped in this heat. Yesterday was 110- I didn't pay attention to the heat index, which is usually a lot higher than that. I talked to my Post Office about shipping, they said NO live animals should be shipped in this heat. The animals are transported in the backs of the large trucks- which when they are closed up, reach insanely high temps. Probably cooking your babies. I ordered chicks, but selected to have mine shipped in October when hopefully this heat wave has broke. Which BTW, this heat in our area (KS, OK, and TX) should last well into September! This is much hotter than usual here and I've even been dealing with heat stroke in my horses! This is not typical, it's just darned hot. I think it's a bad idea to ship right now.

I had one chick who got off to a rough start due to shipping stress, and I have found that Poultry Nutri-Drench, added to the water, helps to give stressed chicks a boost. It can also be administered directly to weak chicks.
It's basically vitamins in a molasses base. I found it in my feed store.
Another BYC member recommended it to me and it will now always be a part of my supply cabinet.

Its been in the low 80's here in Wisconsin. Last week I talked to Ideal before my chicks were shipped and they were sent off around 5 in the afternoon on Wednesday when it should have been cooling off a bit. I was hoping since the PO drives the chicks through the night they would have been out of the hottest parts of the south by Thursday afternoon and I picked them up at 5 in the morning on Friday. They were only in transit for approximately 36 hours. They ended up crediting me for all of my chicks that I lost PLUS they have offered to send me replacements with the dark brown egg layers that didn't hatch last week. Its going to be cool and rainy up here most of the week so I hope they do better.

DO NOT HAVE YOUR CHICKS SHIPPED THIS WEEK!!!! I live approx. 45 miles from Ideal Poultry. We are having temps around 108 all this week and the heat index is 110+. The grown chickens in this area have stopped laying...some have died. I have been lucky with mine but my friends...not so lucky! I LOVE Ideal Poultry chickens, that's where all mine come from, but I would not dare have any shipped to me right now or any time soon. We are under extreme heat advisory with no relief in sight. Please wait until fall to get your chicks re-shipped. I just can't imagine any animal making it in this heat much less day old chicks.

Oh my gosh! I wonder if they can delay reshipping replacement chicks. That is waaaaayyyyy hot.

ETA I will just call and ask. They've been so good this far, I'm sure its not a problem to hold off a few weeks or even a month.

I can't imagine them NOT waiting to re-ship your chicks. They have some great deals right now with bantams, ducks, and guineas but .......I sure wouldn't want to open up the box when they arrived. Good luck with your replacements. As I said, I get all my chicks from Ideal Poultry. They are good chickens, good layers, and good lookin! Just wait till it cools off.

Honestly, I am surprised ANY hatchery is willing to ship in July and August. I didn't even think about it but had I, I never would have ordered chicks right now. It is hot everywhere and its just too much.

I did call Ideal and they were very nice. They are crediting me for the losses and were willing to send replacements but I declined.
