ive had 1 bird killed by a dog,, it was when i first started birds,,, 1 of them flew over the fence,, and someones dog came and got it,, after i "dealt" with the dog, i HAD to look at my kids ( it was their bird) and tell them that DAD messed up,, and didnt clip her wings when i should of,, and it wasnt the dogs fault,, it was mine for being an idiot. of course, the chicken, the dog, both paid high prices for MY mistake,, but it sux when ya wont lie to ya kids and just blame others,, instead of yaself.

Yes, you should have a strong coop. You can't have nothing but, say, a tarp for a coop and be surprised when chickens get attacked.
HOWEVER! Wild animals are a threat too, but dogs can BE contained/diciplined/whatever. We have some bully dogs next door and they just look at the hens. Never tried to get in (

). Good doggies. So the way I see it is this:
First time shame on you.
Second time shame on me.

How sad that you choose to see things that way Marlin. I hope someday you'll realize that it is everyone's responsibility to protect their animals, whether they be dog or chickens. To protect your dog means to keep the sucker off my land. So far I haven't lost a bird to a neighbors dog. But my neighbors have lost dogs to my gun.

I have disagree somewhat. I HAVE spent tens of thousands of dollars fencing my property. To keep mine secure and to keep others out. I have two layers of security for my own dogs, to prevent them from getting out. But I still have a dog that has come through my premieter fencing and my fencing for the chickens, twice. It is not a neighbor, it is traveling through 10 heavily wooded acres and crossing multiple fences before getting to mine.

Why should my animals and myself not be able to enjoy our property without fear of someone elses animal? I prefer my chickens to be able to enjoy the property, it's why I have it.

Now if my own dogs were to attack my own, which they would, it would be my fault. If a wild animal were to attack it would also be my fault.

My dogs have learned to respect their boundaries and fences. There is no reason everyone else can't do the same.

I agree with that completely. This isn't a blame the owner thread, this
is an "accept the reality" thread.

Seed this has nothing to do with someone breaking into your house it
being your fault. That is not a logical comparison.

I think you need to reread my post, it may be both parties responsibility, but if your neighbour does not take the responsibility for his actions you must step up and take the responsibility, or accept the blame for not take the EXTRA responsiblity. Because your neighbour isnt taking responsibility doesnt make your birds any less dead.

its like blaming mother nature for a tornado that went through ya house and killed everything inside,,,,,its STILL MY FAULT,,, if i dont have a storm shelter for my family, and we perish in that tornado,,its ALL my fault.

I disagree with all points you have made in your sharp criticisms. I tend to think country folks have dealt with rogue animals killing stock since time began and still do. As well, I grew up Country and know for a fact there is no such thing as a "strong enough coop" unless it is a horribly confined area such as a metal building, which is unacceptable to thinking people with backyard flocks.

Your idea that you'd shoot a dog that killed one of your birds would land you in a cage where I live. We have laws governing such things.

The emotional attachments backyard flock holders have for their animals is remarkable, not sickening. All the birds have names, personalities, and quickly become pets.

As for praying for a pet that has been killed, you have no idea who has been posting. It could be a homeschooled child.

What makes you sick might not be what makes anyone else sick who is really raising a backyard flock in the City.

Your fault finding is not in line with the assistance those posters are seeking.

We live in a different world now, and it is not a world where people think animals are simply rote creatures.

You may want to read my initial post again. Your conclusions are all incorrect.

Your homeschooled child comment is insulting. Most homeschooled
children are aware of what prevention and personal responsibility
stand for.
