a dog can only be detained by smart people,,,,, how many smart people are there out there?
and if a coop cant be built strong enough to keep a dog out,,, how come you expect something to be built strong enough to keep them IN?
if ya letr ya birds free range,, then you want them to be in a natural setting right???? well,, birds, dogs, coyotes are all a part of nature,, and they all NATURALLY kill for their food,,
and if a dog can get into your coop,,, then ya need to be taught by a carpenter how to REALLY build.
but,, it is always easier to just blame the idiot dog owner,,, that way ya wont have to do anything extra to fullfill your responsibility as a "owner/ protector of ya pets.
Purple, my conclusions are based on what I read in your posting. The conclusions are mine, and were not up for a grade point. That means they were not in error.
We have also suffered the loss of two animals from our backyard flock when the Rot next door climbed the fence or dug under the fence. We have installed three layers of fencing now, a security camera, and installed a steel girder under the fencing to keep him out. All the animals have secure shelters.
I stand by my posting, not to aggrivate you or provoke any further negative responses from you. I have my opinions, and you have yours.
It is my opinion that folks who have lost a pet do suffer emotionally, and when they post a loss they are seeking comfort and solution.
It is my hope this thread is not shut down because I think it is important that all views are expressed, and because of those expressions perhaps a real solution to the problem will be found -- such as an acceptable deterrent -- not a gun blast.
I think there's some science to be had in this issue, and we need to find it.
I have to agree that I bypass the "neighbor's dog killed my chicken" threads. My German shorthaired pointer has killed a few of my chickens over the years, and it was my fault completely. I have made a pretty dog proof coop and run, but I accidentally let him out while it was open. I do feel bad when a neighboring dog does this, but often times it seems the birds are free range and there are no fences.
I'm sorry but I can't believe what I'm reading. So, if I buy a house and my neighbors have horses I have to put up a fence strong enough to keep THEIR horses out of my yard because I'd like to have a great looking lawn and maybe some very nice Ornamental plants and one day their horses may get out and cause damage? Even if I don't want a fenced in yard???? That's ridiculous!
if ya dont want ANYTHING in ya yard,,, YUP,, its up to YOU to keep it that way. there will ALWAYS be loose animals,,in EVERY city, EVERY town,,and ANYONE that doesnt KNOW that is living like a hermit,,, so,, if we ALL have enough "common sense" and that tells ya there WILL ALWAYS be predators,,,, then shouldnt plain ole "common sense" tell ya to prepare for that?

The neighbor should take responsiblity for her horses(no respectable man would own a horse)
If it does get loose, At that point you shoot the Horse, find a good slaughterhouse and claim you thought it was a deer, or you contact the neighbour and the law, and get your yard returned to the original condition. Then you can post a my neighbours horse ran across my yard will you pray for my grass seed to grow thread, I am sure there will be plenty willing to pray for your grass too.
just dont expect that neighbour to show up at your Cookout for Burgers.
