If you bring a show bird into your flock question True or not true?

Crzychicken, since her birds were vaccinated by McMurry, you can call them and ask whether the vaccine they use creates a carrier state and how long they need to be quarantined from non-vaccinated birds.

But I mostly agree with Horsejody's comment about quarantining new birds, and that the lack of it is probably the original cause of flock deaths.

After reading all the post about the issues I have a new question. If they are shedding the disease after being vaccinated then what is the time period of that disease as a ground spore or life time in the ground? I know there are diseases that can live a very long time in the soil and in wood. It just made me wonder if they are shedding this and you don't have non-porous housing, nesting or roost what is the time frame that those disease can live? I know parvo can live in the ground for 10+ years give or take.. strangles forever it seems in wood and soil .... so what is the live span for those chicken disease ?

I called Mcmurry today they said after 30 days of giving them the vacc have no concerns with getting passed to any chicks or chickens it's more like 10-14 but 30 days is what most people wait to be on the side of caution. It's like getting a flu shot when they use live virus in them your body builds immuity to the flu virus that is in vacc.. true some might get it the flu from live virus, usally if you have a weaker immune systems and the same with chickens that's why she said give it 30 days to shed New castles goes in the water and the lT is eye drop.

I'm glad I found out. My neighbor had no Idea what she did give them.To top it all off they just moved here and there are farms all around me, if what she said WAS true she would have put all our birds at risk my biggest concern was for my other neighbor jack who make a living on selling Veggie, eggs, beef, ect.. and grow Organic, and they had taken some of her roos to a friend for a favor because this neighbor had too many asked her if she wanted some. We both learned a huge lesson always ask question on what you GIVE any animal or who you get them from and what they gave them and don't just give them stuff without looking into it what it does and for how long.

Here in Missouri you can send a copy of your NPIP cetrtificate or test papers with your entry, bring your papers with you or get your birds tested at the show (someone is there a majority of the time). The folks putting on the show keep track of who has papers. You are not suppose to bring in birds without being tested.

The above statement by therealsilkie is true. There are two kinds of Laryngo vaccines, one is "embryo derived" and the other is "tissue derived." The LT-IVAC is the tissue variety and the safe one. Some places sell both kinds. The embryo derived version MAY make a flock a "carrier flock" for life. The tissue derived one is about $16 whereas the embryo derived one is cheaper (about $8). The "tissue derived" LT vaccine is safe and your flock will NOT become a carrier flock. Instead, it as therealsilkie says, after vaccinating them, you should not take them to a show or around unvaccinated birds for max of 30 days because of the shedding of the virus as they MAY give it to unvaccinated birds BUT is safe thereafter.

I vaccinate for Marek's, Laryngo & Fowl Pox based upon what my local Ag representative said he saw in flocks here in my State. I buy my vaccine from First State Vet. I have only seen fowl pox on my birds and although it wasn't severe cases, I'd just prefer not to see it again. Fowl Pox is carried by mosquitos so almost unavoidable here.​
