If you could only have one duck: male or female?

Echoing the rest, i'd try for two, ducks share ducky things, yes, sometimes their are nice chicken/duck relationships but those are the exceptions not the rule. Ducks are quite loud and chatty, i have Muscovy mostly so for a comparison, yes they are much quieter.

If your put off by the flesh, ducks have less and some strains have less period.. here this is my Miss Lilly, she is a fully mature adult.

Forgot, yes a singular drake with chicken hens would simply not be a good mix, i wouldn't suggest it at all. The drake is not compatible with the hens and could harm them.

I would get two ducks, a male and a female. We have a male and female khaki campell, they went everywhere together, until a neighbor dog attacked and injured our female a few weeks ago. When we separated her from the male to get her to heal, he stayed right by her side outside of her cage. Then he started trying to mate with our hens, so we had to separate him from the flock! Otherwise, they both got along with our chickens just fine.

If you can only get one, I'd go with a female just because your male will want to mate your chickens and that can kill them.
