If you won a million $ lottery, what would you buy for yourself?

I would not tell a sole and cut a hole in my mattress and stash it in there!

you tell people and `friends`start to come out of the wood work like crazy... like the bestest friend that you had in grade 1

I would not trust my government by investing it in any GIC mutual fund or any other plan like that.. not after the last financial crisis we are still digging out of

I would pay for HALF of my kids education... I would still want them to know how to work and earn their way in life

I would buy my new mid-size car and a new pick up for hubby

and thats about it!

I would buy land and build a farm house... Then some horses and then some goats. And of coarse more chickens. lol

" I think BYC people are pretty nice and level headed!"

In every hypothetical situation, yes.

In truth, we'd probably all go nuts and blow it.

"I would not tell a soul"

That's a good idea. It appears that people have disappeared over less money.

But I wouldn't stuff it in a mattress. That'd be about the time my house would burn down.

I'd pay off my dad's debt, and help out on the inlaws.

Buy some land and get a house built, a sprawling ranch with a master suite, but only 3 bedrooms. Finished basement with a bar and stuff, a walk-out if possible. Landscaped critter free yard, with easy access to the animals. Everything designed for energy efficient, ease of care, and maybe an apartment in the barn for someone to stay in if they house sat. I'm weird about people in the house when I'm not there, but a care giver's house would be cool.

Offer to move my dad to his own ranch house on the property. Maybe the inlaws too to get them from their place. Us in the middle... neat trails connecting it all? That wouldn't be too bad. One big garden for all.

A truck, a boat, and a Prius. Couple of 4 wheelers. 2 mini horses, maybe 4.

10% to the church. Couple of charities that DID NOT contact me after they found out I won. I'm not big on supporting solicitation. Or do that show "undercover millionaire" where they submerse you into a good project but no one knows you have money, and then you come out and donate. That would be fun and you'd know exactly where your money is going. I'm really weird about not knowing what the dollars are doing. I don't want to be paying them to fund raise more or line their own pockets, I want to actually see some results. At least with the church, I know it's going to either the school or a mission. Directly. Or the electric bill, or a new van. They tell you every Sunday what's on the agenda and they say thanks if there isn't an immediate need. One of the few churches I've ever been to that didn't try to guilt you into giving or talk about it for too long.

I wouldn't help any family other than the parents. You help one aunt, they all want a piece. You help one cousin, the rest will come knocking. Everyone should understand the parents bore us and raised us, we'll help them. Might have to disown a couple of uncles, they are... money hounds and beg/barrow/ sometimes steal.

Would invest half of what's left after everything was situated. Not buying anything ridiculous, or over the top. No reason to get stupid with it. Not getting so many animals that it would be impossible to travel. Might get a toy hauler RV and hit the yard for 6 months or something.

Only thing left to do is win! LOL

Uh, perhaps some would. I'd give myself permission to blow two or three thousand, but even a lot of that would be on things that could produce income.

Adding to the things that I posted above: I'd probably spend about $5,000 on some things for my property. I'd get the pool ripped out and garden beds built in its place (something I'd love to do anyway), fix up my fences when they needed it down the road, and get some electrical work done by SOMEONE ELSE. I despise doing electrical and plumbing work.

I'd consider making an offer on the property next door to me, so that I'd have a place for my grandparents, when needed, too, or for my son when he's grown. That would still leave a hundred grand over, though, with property prices in my neighborhood. If they didn't use it, then it could be rental income. Given the location, I could probably also get a permit for a small business, if I ever wanted a studio there.
