Illinois traders!!!!

I am in Rockford could we meet some where? What are you looking to get for your eggs? My kids and I have our first set of eggs in the incubator and are thinking about putting a second set in this weekend. I could give you back some chicks if you wanted to work it out that way.

I have quite a few eggs right now, mostly from the Marans hens. Trouble is the daddy is an Araucana which if you look this up online, is said to carry a "death gene". If I understand this correctly, it means high mortality for the eggs and/or chicks. I had a friend incubate my eggs about a couple years ago. (Different hens then) If I remember correctly she had 5 good eggs out of 12 with only one hatchling. That chick died very quickly after birth.

My second rooster is a gorgeous Silver Splash Marans but right now he is "in jail" due to behavior problems. Once it warms up here I'd like to switch around my housing arrangement to see if I can deal with his aggression. If all works I suspect his will be the dominant rooster and, hence, fertilizing the eggs. Right now it's all I can do to keep them warm and with fresh water. It must be the same for you up there!

If you want to try and meet, that's fine. Actually I have plans to drive up to Mt. Horeb tomorrow unless the weather changes our minds. Giving me back some chicks would be just fine. I just wanted to help out and get a real kick out of seeing the eggs hatch. Silly, I know! I just wanted to be honest about the genetics. Not sure I'm right, but those are my suspicions anyways.

Orp, What color is your Araucana rooster and where did you get him? I have a pullet that needs a beau!
He's all black and I got him from a breeder in southern Illinois near Carbondale. No way would I give him up, he's a real sweetie. Might trade my Marans rooster for an Araucana pullet though! But he is mean as all hell -- you might not want him!

Well I can't find anything on the death gene Iwould be willing to give it a shot if you want to meet up and give me some eggs I have been saving for a couple days and as I said would like to start a new batch this weekend. neither one of us will be out anything if it s=doesn't work right.

The lethal gene in Araucanas requires two copies of the tufted gene to "kick-in". An Araucana bred to another breed shouldn't be any more risky than any other breeding. An Araucana rooster over Marans hens should produce pullets that will lay green/olive eggs. You'll love 'em!!

No thanks on the Marans rooster........only Icelandic roosters here

Thanks for stating this much better than I did!
sasimpson77 did you catch this? The real dark eggs I gave you are from the Americana hens. Lighter ones are from Red Sex Links. The Americanas are laying well right now so most of the eggs are from them. Hens are all gray. Daddy is all black with some silver on his collar - Araucana. I took a video yesterday of a crowing contest between the 2 boys. I'll load it here if you want to see the Mommas and Daddy.

Ok I guess I am confused I thought the eggs were from your maran hens. Are they out of Araucana ? They would be pure bred then right? That is how they could have the lethal gene then I am very confused though because I did not know Americana eggs were brown?

I would love to see the video of the Crow off lol.

What was I THINKING!! What I meant to write:

The real dark eggs are from the MARANS hens. . . The MARANS are laying well right now.

Daddy IS a black Araucana.

Sorry, and I'll try to load the video!
