I'm so sorry you lost that boy. He was a real sweetheart - like Puppy.


Speaking of Puppy, did he settle down into the flock? Did her remember his "buddies", the lav & blue laced boys?

Puppy is pouting because he isn't too dog but he's doing okay. Less cocky which is good. I was worried he was going to get himself killed.

The calico jake has decided he is the peace keeper so basically he attacks any cockerals that cause excess trouble. I don't mind him breaking up fights except I worry he could lose control. I've only seen him grab a couple of the birds by the head or comb and I immediately stop him. Mostly he postures and jumps at trouble makers.

The babies are doing great in the tractor! They got the occasional peck at first but I haven't seen them be pecked in days.

The nari jenny is so beautiful still learning she can trust us and the dogs but she is loving it out here. That said I haven't found her eggs yet, the brat is hiding them.

The calico jenny cane out of hiding yesterday and today I think she's on about day 5 but I would have to go back and look to be sure. I should have written it down. She has also been out today. I think she is brooding under the wood shed they pulled to the ground this March or so. Unfortunately we can't get under there but I may try to crawl in.

yes that progression of comb color is typical heart issues
I guess you could have found a vet to do a heart transplant, of course you would have to supply a donor heart ...

I have some cockerals and roosters I would gladly have taken their hearts to use as a donor. I'm bummed we lost him. He was so so sweet.

You're very welcome. DD enjoyed chick sitting, and I'm glad I could bring a bit of joy to your dad. I actually wanted to cook your family a whole meal, but bread was what I had the time for today. (BTW- It's @chickendreams24 's fav recipe. Now that I have the start of my herb garden, I was able to pick it fresh this morning.)

I'm glad your dad is staying with you for a while. Being with family helps. I'm also so happy you took the time off to be with your mom.

Pebbles got let back outside yesterday as she was having none of this being locked up in the porch garbage. DH2B has dubbed her my free spirit chicken.

She's still thin but was refusing food and water yesterday inside. Even scrambled eggs.

As soon as we let her out she went and got a drink and then went and was pecking around when we fed the flock.

Still not eating as much as I'd like but she's improving. Today she actually jumped up onto my arm of her own accord. Something that's her signature and I call her my little hawk/owl.

I'm keeping a very close eye on her and she did come in the porch and ate from a feed dish some today. I let her straight back out when she was done.

I also locked down the styro-bator today for the first set of poults. All the eggs look good and alive we did have maybe 1-2 chicken eggs quit early or never start. The chicken eggs have about 1 day more than the poults. That said I've never hatched poults and I'm a bit nervous they don't look developed enough. The incubator has read right on the whole time along with the back up thermometer (but I did have to move that to the coolerbator). We'll see how it goes.

I'd like to also add in to all the people who long to be mothers and to those who are only the mothers of animals and lastly to the people that have lost and are missing their mothers today. You're in my thoughts and prayers today.

Happy Mother's Day to all my BYC friends!
(..... even when they're teens and often feel they don't need us, they're still our babies!)

The kids started making breakfast for me. (They only woke me up twice to ask where things were.) DD started feeling sick, so DH took over. Then the dog vomited. I ended up getting out of bed to finish making breakfast, so DH had to deal with the dog & clean up.

Although off to a rough start, I asked for my family's help to get the yard in shape. I ended up getting them to work both Sat & Sun, so I'm feeling pretty good. (and slightly sore.)

Speaking of yard clean up..... does anyone nearby want some free raspberry plants? They spread into the grass, and are going to be cut the next time we mow. They give a harvest around July 4th & another in Sept. Just bring cups or a bucket to bring them home. I can let you borrow a spade. I already dug some up for teacher gifts and transplanted what I wanted.

Happy Mother's day to all of my BYC family ...and lastly to the people that have lost and are missing their mothers today. You're in my thoughts and prayers today.

Thank you. It's so hard to imagine - until it happens. Then it's difficult and very painful to accept. It's been a few years and I still found myself crying last night. (Not every night, but my mom was the person to whom I always turned. My whole life changed when she passed.) Some of the friends here on BYC (like you) helped me through some of those roughest times, so again thank you.

I'm happy Pebbles is perking up. Hopefully she keeps up the good progress.

I'm also glad Puppy is learning his place. He's such a good boy. My hens liked him a lot & he was beginning to tidbit and watch out for them. (Unlike Mr Wonderful who still tidbits while gobbling the treats as fast as he can.)

The biggest advice I have with hatching poults is to kick up the humidity as high as it will go (just short of raining in the incubator) and be ready for them to hatch early. Who knows, they could be late. I just know they probably won't hatch on the day you expect them. LOL

Well, for my mothers day, i took advantage of meijers 10 for 10 deal and stocked up on an very empty cold room storage. Actually still at the store checking out and then home to put it away.

@Faraday40 I went ahead and bit the bullet and bid on those 12+ lavender english orps. The seller actually has bk/lv split hens and dutifully breeds the color back into them. I asked her if instead of 12 lav eggs if incould get some bk/lv split ones and she said she had 2 that werent broody, so she might throw a few in. Now whether thats extra or in place I don't know, but we shall see. If they hatch, they should be really nice birds. The pictures of her birds are gorgeous. Comments for her are also folks have a decent hatch rate as well. We shall see.

Did you win the eggs?
My shipped Coronation Sussex eggs are dong OK so far. I purchased 8, 10 were shipped, 6 started developing. Shipped eggs are a little tricky, but sometimes we can get lucky. If the buyer feedback is good & the seller's been doing it a while, it's worth a try. (You can call it a "Mother's Day" gift if you need a justification.)

I'm willing to give you some incubation tips. Heck, I would even hatch them for you..... but of course I don't want to take the fun away from your kids.

We have poults!!!


And they have feets!!! Or at least so far they do.

One was out this morning (no pips last night when I went to bed) looks like a little slate or maybe lavender.

The second spent 3 hours trying to zip so I decided to check what was wrong. The membrane had glued over the chick's wing and it could finish turning to zip. It never would have made it out I don't think. It actually was starting to tear or really irritate some of it's skin trying to turn.

I got it unstuck and it's out. Can't tell color yet. It does have a bit of a raw open navel should be fine though.

The third pip has totally zipped and flipped the top now I'm just waiting for it to climb out.
