Look what I've finally got going!!!

And 1 odd shaped silkie egg from Faradays Mai Mai.

The only thing about this inky is maintaining the humidity. It was 29%, i added probably less than 30cc and the humidity is now 58% and still climbing slowly. I guess I need to go with 20cc twice a day as it seems to drain it quickly.

Stacked incubators! I love it! Do you plan on running the bigger one or are you going to add the fan 1st?

I am saving the big one for DS experiment. We collected week 2's eggs another two weeks to go. Then we will have eggs that are fresh out of the chicken, 1 week, 2 week, and 3 weeks old. Then see how hate rate is. Im probably just going to have to increase temperature to the 101 required for still air. Depends on if I make it to big r by the time I'm ready to start.

Also, how is Jake doing today?

Jake seems to be doing ok. Still watching over his girls. I didn't bring him in tonight for any treatment, but probably will tomorrow. Luckily, the coyote has stayed away today. I hope he stays away. DH was trying to sight our rifle better this afternoon before the rain came through and stopped him.

mama turkey hatched hers first around 5-2, her daughter nested in that end of the coop by her and hatched around 5-13. Daughter leaves the kids with her mom and galivants around the poultry yard for hours, Roosts at night. When mama goes out daughter does too and does let them huddle under her. But mama is doing most of the work.
Another daughter hatched around 5-2 and is locked in a different coop. She has 2 of mama's because mama had one get lost and died out of the coop. She was trying to get them to roost last night. 1 made it up there and the others were huddled on the ground under her. At dusk, I went in and pet her so she jumped down... first time I ever touched her

Since I can't tell the girls from the boys and I plan on eating the boys
I feel bad if I gain their trust and then wack em
Some how I just can't wack a perfectly good girl that someone else could use... boys are easier because they cause troubles.
Just wacked a backup cockerel yesterday that the girls didn't like. I had sold 13 hens and 7 are broody so not enough willing girls to go around. 6 hens are getting old and don't like young boys
So counting the broodies, I have 47 chicken hens and 4 roosters.

Hey, everybody! I've been away from BYC for a little while again. My 4 chicks turned into 1 chick. 3 days in a row a dead chick was found. The 1 survivor is a trooper though and growing well. I need to get some pics to post so I can get help with sexing. I'm really hoping for a female at this point. A male would have to go to freezer camp once big enough since we cannot keep them in our area. This certainly was not quite the fill-the-freezer hatch I originally thought it was going to be with several chickens and turkeys.

My quail are being little brats. They are holding out on laying eggs for some reason. They look healthy and we have culled the males as well as half the flock (can you say, "Winner! Winner! Quail dinner!") to ensure they are not feeling crowded.
Additionally, 1 of our quail (a female I'm pretty sure) escaped the hutch. A few days ago. She showed up in the backyard again yesterday, but got over the fence before i could catch her. She'll show up again I think. We are staying vigilant.

On another front (or rear ) we have had great success in composting chicken and quail manure. Take a look at this beautiful stuff. If it would dry up a bit I could sift it, or I might just use it as is on the garden. The clay soil would benefit from the fibrous materials anyway.

It never seems to end around here.

Today my future MIL got a call she's been waiting on for several years now.

She got the call for a lung transplant.

So we are up in uw Madison now.

Everyone please keep us in your prayers and thoughts. This is of course an extremely risky surgery and so close to our wedding.

We're terrified and excited and then a little more(okay a lot) more terrified.
